Wawasee Shoots Down Whitko Wildcats

The Warriors hit a stunning 12 three-pointers in a 59-41 boys basketball rout of the Whitko Wildcats.
“We’ve been really struggling getting comfortable in our offense and knocking down shots,” said Wawasee coach Jon Everingham. “We made the shots and made the key run, and we relied on our defense to be really solid.”
The score was tied at 19 in the second quarter when the?Warriors went into trey mode.
Aaron Evans knocked down a three-pointer.
Austin Miller nailed a trey on the next possession for a six-point advantage.
Following a Wawasee timeout, Ethan Hardy got in on the fun behind the arc.
Miller drained another three, and all of a sudden the Warriors led by 12.
“We worked really hard to get a six-point lead, and then just like that it’s 12 and it changes the complexity of the game,” Everingham said. “That sequence right there was the game-changer.”
The?Warriors went into the half up 11, and knew they’d have to come out firing in the third.
“I told those guys coming out at halftime, ‘(The Wildcats) are gonna come with some pressure, they’re gonna put up a fight,’”?Everingham said.
The Warriors heeded their coach’s words.
They stretched a 14-3 run to end the first half into a 30-5 run well into the third quarter.
Bennett Hoffert, who had scored just three points in the first half, ended up with 15 for the game after hitting four threes in the third.
“Bennett is really stepping up,” Everingham said. “He’s doing a great job of reading screens, and when he’s open he’s knocking down shots.”
Wawasee let up a little in the fourth quarter, but by then the game had been decided.
The win was the first of the season for the?Warriors (1-4).
Meanwhile, Whitko (1-4) is on a four-game skid after opening the season with a victory.
“We’re a better team than what we’re playing like,” said Whitko coach Eli Henson. “I hate to go through a stretch like this, but if we can learn something from it and grow from it, then we can move on from it.”
Clayton Ebbinghouse and Drake Lewis each scored 10 points for the Wildcats, who will play at Prairie Heights Wednesday.
Austin Miller scored a game-high 17 points for the Warriors, who host Warsaw Friday.
