Along the way, senior Sophie Bussard put another exclamation point on her prep career.
In a 55-27 non-conference high school girls basketball win over the Triton Lady Trojans, Valley scored the first seven points of the game and led 18-6 by the end of the first quarter.
The hosts went on to lead 33-10 at halftime and 44-18 after three quarters of play en route to the 28-point win.
The Lady Vikings improved to 7-3, while Triton fell to 2-10.
“That was the plan,” Valley coach Chris Kindig said of the quick start. “We felt like we needed to put a lot of pressure on them, and I think we were able to do that tonight.
“It was real similar to our game with Wabash last week where I think we were up 16-2 or 16-3 and we kind of shut it down a bit in the second half. Our goal was to keep them under 20 (points) tonight, and we didn’t quite get that done.
“It was one of those games where it’s really tough to stay focused. We talked in the locker room that one of the main things for us is trying to get better. Whether you’re up 20 or you’re down 20, you need to come out and play your game. That’s kind of what our goal was in the second half, we just wanted to come out and improve, play at our level, and that was kind of the pregame speech, too.”
The Lady Vikings benefitted from 22 Triton turnovers.
Valley scored 30 points off Triton turnovers, three more than the Lady Trojans scored in the game.
“Turnovers have hurt us all year,” said Triton coach Adam Heckaman. “We worked on skip passes a little this week in practice and I think we tried to get a little happy with that at the beginning tonight, and it cost us with some passes that went over people’s head, with Valley stealing it and scoring layups.
“You can’t give up 30 points off turnovers and expect to win. That’s something we have to get better at.”
The highlight of the game was a bucket by Bussard with 5:44 remaining in the third quarter.
The Southeast Missouri State University recruit’s bucket pushed the score to 35-12 at the time and made her the sixth player in program history to score 1,000 points for the Lady Vikings.
Bussard finished the game with 20 points, adding eight rebounds, six steals and three assists to her statline, and now sits fifth on the Lady Vikings’ all-time scoring list with 1,007 points.
She joined Anne Secrest (1,580), Rebekah Parker (1,420), Staci Groom (1,136), Hannah Krueger (1,036) and Kara Kramer (1,006) on the list of 1,000-point scorers at Valley.
“We weren’t sure how long in the season it would take, you never know what the situation is gonna be,” Kindig said of Bussard’s milestone.
“We figured it would be game 10 or so if she averaged 20 points per game. We’re gonna do a little presentation Friday night before the game (with North Miami), and that’s something I think she’ll appreciate a year from now, five years from now. Right now you’re just focused on winning the game, getting better, trying to help this team win.
“Obviously she’s a fantastic player, and I’m really happy for her that she was able to do it. By the end of the year she’s probably gonna be up there in the top three or four all-time at Valley.”
Wednesday’s accomplishment was the third time this school year Bussard has surpassed 1,000 on the stat sheet.
In the fall, Bussard surpassed 1,000 career digs and 1,000 kills playing volleyball for coach Mallory Eaton.
Junior Jillian Walls scored 13 points for Valley, while classmate Makenzie Woodcox chipped in with nine.
Junior Emma Craig tallied five points and five assists in the win, classmate Karina Young scored four points, and sophomores Sidney Wagner and Haley Backus rounded out Valley’s scoring with two points each.
Sophomore Lexia Hostrawser led Triton with 12 points and seven rebounds, while junior Alyxa Viers scored 10 points.
In the JV?game, Valley outscored Triton 24-2 in the second half and won 43-13.
The Lady Vikings are in action again Friday when they host Three Rivers Conference rival North Miami.
Triton travels to Caston Saturday for a Hoosier North Athletic Conference game.
