Mayer Will Celebrate 90 Years On Sept. 8

Born in 1928 and raised in Columbus, Ohio, he has been a resident of Warsaw for 39 years. He has lived in nine states and Japan, each for a year or longer.
He enlisted in the Air Force at 17 after graduation from high school. He was on active and reserve duty for over 33 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.
Bob moved to Indiana to become assistant director of the Winona School of Photography. When that position was eliminated, he became a freelance writer for many national publications, writing primarily about various aspects of photography. For over 20 years he was senior editor of Shutterbug magazine, where he wrote a monthly reader Q&A column, tested and reviewed various items of film photography equipment, and covered an annual national photographic convention for over 50 years as an editor and before that for two major photographic firms, Bell and Howell Mamiya and GAF Ansco, for whom he worked before moving to Warsaw. He taught photography for four years at Arizona State University and the Rochester Institute of Technology.
His late wife, Grace, worked at the YMCA for over 15 years. They have two daughters, Linda and Vicki; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A group of 12 relatives is planning to come in from out of state to help celebrate Bob’s birthday at a local restaurant.
He keeps busy these days playing bridge several times each week and visiting relatives whenever possible.
