Grace Roundup: Villalobos Leads Lady Lancers To Win
By Josh Neuhart-
The Lady Lancers improved to 3-0 on the young season, posting a shutout in each match.
On Wednesday, Grace dominated possession and shot opportunities from the opening kickoff. The Lady Lancers outshot the Wolverines 38-3 over the course of the 90 minutes, racking up 18 shots on goal. The Wolverines (0-1) were also blanked 10-0 in corner kicks.
It took Villalobos 20 minutes to record her first goal. Joana Schimmel advanced the ball along the left side of the field and found Allison Vroon in space. Vroon quickly found Villalobos, who buried a 20-yard shot just inside the far post.
Twelve minutes later, she scored again. Baylei Peters dribbled the ball dangerously into the Wolverines’ penalty box and squared a pass to Villalobos; the junior coolly slotted her shot to the back post at the 32:08 mark.
The teams went into halftime with Grace ahead 2-0. The Lady Lancers owned a shocking 24-0 advantage in shot attempts over the first 45 minutes.
Villalobos completed her hat trick in the 57th minute. Shelby Fort beat the Wolverines’ backline with a run, and she passed the ball ahead to Villalobos inside the box. UMD’s goalkeeper made a sharp 1-on-1 save against Villalobos, but Villalobos alertly gathered the rebound and rifled in her second try in front of the goal.
She added a fourth strike with 15 minutes to play. Peters again provided the pass after a well-built attack, teeing up Villalobos from 20 yards out for her fourth goal of the match.
Peters assisted two of Villalobos’ goals on Wednesday, adding two shots of her own. Villalobos had eight shots, Schimmel tallied six shots, and Liz Van Wormer added five more.
Bethany Blackwood, the reigning Crossroads League Defender of the Week, made two saves in 90 minutes. The freshman goalkeeper has yet to allow a goal to score against her in 270 minutes of action.
The Lady Lancers remain at home on Saturday, hosting Lindenwood-Belleville at 7 p.m. at 1st Source Bank Field.
Lancers Win In OT
WINONA LAKE – Last year, Grace’s men’s soccer team earned the nickname “Cardiac Kids” for their penchant to win games late.
This season might not be much different.
The Lancers defeated Aquinas 1-0 in overtime thanks to Ivan Santagiuliana’s golden goal.
Grace seemed to be in control throughout the match. The Lancers (2-1-1) kept near-constant pressure on the Saints’ goal, pelting Aquinas’s net with 34 shots.
The Saints (0-1), on the other hand, could only muster five shots and two on goal.
Grace maintained control of the ball for much of the first half, but the Lancers were unable to get on the scoreboard. Ten shots and two corner kicks were taken by Grace in the opening 45 minutes to no avail.
The Lancers’ attack ramped up considerably in the second half, leaving the Saints scrambling defensively after halftime. Grace racked up 22 shot attempts in the second half.
But the Saints withstood the offensive barrage from the Lancers, and the match remained scoreless to set the stage for Grace’s winner.
The winning moment came in overtime. Colin Cape played a dangerous ball into the box, and Santagiuliana finished it for his first goal for the Lancers.
“I thought we were strong in possession tonight, but we lacked the ability to score. We missed a few chances early, and if we would have made those then maybe the game looks different,” said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. “Some of the guys are beginning to find a rhythm on offense, and once a couple of these guys score a goal, then the confidence will take root.”
Cody Boerema led all players with six shots, and Ulisses Miranda added five more. Togo Narusawa, Cape and Breno Oliveira each took four shots.
Kurt Hamlin recorded his third shutout of the season. He made a pair of saves as Grace’s goalkeeper.
The Lancers stay at home for their next match as Grace hosts Bluefield on Monday at 2 p.m.
Grace Spikers Sweep Taylor
UPLAND – Grace’s volleyball team got the Crossroads League season started in dominant fashion with a 3-0 win at Taylor on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers (7-2, 1-0 Crossroads League) sank Taylor in three sets, despite two being hotly contested.
Grace’s defense was stout in the match, holding the Trojans (2-2, 0-1 CL) to a .055 hitting percentage.
Midway through the opening set, Taylor pulled ahead 16-11.
But Grace seized momentum with six straight points thanks to the sharp serving of Makayla Bell. Caylie Teel had two kills during Grace’s spurt, leading Grace to a 17-16 lead.
The score remained close and was knotted at 23, and Teel again provided the key plays. She smashed a kill for Grace’s 24th point and secured the set win with a solo block on the next rally.
Grace’s edge continued into the second set. The Lady Lancers surged ahead 13-4 and cruised to a nine-point win.
The third set was practically inseparable. The set alone had 15 ties and seven lead changes. The Trojans were serving for the set at 24-23, but Teel’s kill sent the game into extra points.
Both teams traded the lead down the stretch. Taylor clung to a 28-27 lead, but Grace ended the match with three consecutive winners. Kelsee Zuidema had a kill and a block at the end to cement the road sweep.
Teel had a match-high 13 kills to go along with 11 digs and a solo block, and Zuidema added 11 kills on a .310 percentage and a pair of block assists.
