Triton Falls In Sectional Rematch

August 25, 2018 at 5:16 a.m.

BOURBON –  Nothing doing.

The Triton football team failed to get much offense going in a 19-0 loss to LaVille in a Hoosier North Athletic Conference game at Triton High School.

“It was a break down all over the place,” said Triton coach Ron Brown. “We need to refocus. LaVille came in with a great gameplan and played with a lot of enthusiasm, and they executed.”

The Trojans (1-1, 0-1 HNAC) started off on fire after Delano Shumpert returned the opening kickoff 52 yards to the Lancers’ 27-yard line.

Triton’s momentum collapsed on the next play after a fumble was recovered by LaVille (1-1, 1-0 HNAC).

“That first play from scrimmage, our kids have done a nice job answering the bell when we’re up against the wall,” said LaVille coach Will Hostrawser.

That burst of energy propelled the?Lancers to a 10-play, 61-yard scoring drive capped off by Kolby Watts’ 9-yard scamper to the end zone.

LaVille missed the point-after attempt, but stifled Triton’s early drives.

The?Lancers took  a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter on Andrew Dill’s 32-yard touchdown run.

Triton’s offense began to heat up midway through the second quarter. Tye Orsund, who was playing on a banged up ankle and knee, breathed life into the Trojans by taking a punt-fake-run into Lancers territory.

The Trojans reached LaVille’s 28, but their 4th-and-2 run up the gut fell a yard short.

Brown didn’t place too much emphasis on the play.

“Ifs, ands, and buts are like candies and nuts,” he said. “It is what it is. Who knows what would have happened out of that?

“It doesn’t come down to one play, it comes down to a whole game.”

Triton converted just one first down in the second half, while LaVille scored once more on Robby Pope’s 3-yard touchdown early in the fourth.

LaVille racked up 300 total yards out of their Wing T offense.

“This new offense we’re running, we’re still learning it,” Hostrawser said. ‘There’s a lot of things that we’ll see tomorrow on film that we need to improve upon. Our execution was spotty, but it’s getting a little bit closer to consistent.”

The game was a rematch of last year’s sectional title game, which saw LaVille beat Triton 10-7.

However, both teams went into the game with only the present as their focus.

“We were just ready to play them,” Orsund said. “We just weren’t ready for (what happened at) the beginning.”

Triton will play Friday at 7 p.m. at Caston High School in another conference matchup.
