Road Closure Planned for S.R. 19;

Work Scheduled To Begin Monday

The Indiana Department of Transportation announces that bridge maintenance on S.R. 19 at the Wilhelm-Kurtz Ditch south of Nappanee. will begin Monday, weather permitting.

The closure, which will allow contractors to complete a bridge deck overlay, is scheduled to take place between C.R. W 1350 N and West Hepton Road. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout the work.

The official state detour for the closure will be U.S. 6 to S.R 331 to U.S. 30. The road may be closed up to 90 days.

Work on the bridge is expected to continue through late October, weather permitting.

The contract was awarded to Northern Indiana Construction Co., Inc., for $2.2 million.

Tippecanoe Valley To Host Distinguished Alumni Dinner

AKRON – The Tippecanoe Valley Distinguished Alumni Dinner will be held Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Tippecanoe Valley Middle School Commons. The public is invited.

The cost for the dinner is $6 per adult and $3.00 for students.  Children five years of age and under eat free. Tickets may be purchased from any Tippecanoe Valley school or the Tippecanoe Valley Administration Office. In addition to the meal, each distinguished alumni member will be interviewed and has the opportunity to recognize an educator that made a significant impact on his/her life.

• Six (6) graduates from Tippecanoe Valley High School – Jeff Bever (1995), Robby Hamman (2006), Joe Harter (1980), Derek Jenkins (2007), Amanda Keith (2000) and Douglas Routh (1985)

• One (1) graduate of TVHS/Burket Educational Center – Shalena Hughes Rude (2009)

• One (1) graduate of Mentone High School – Madonna Sue Nellans-Creighton (1962)

Purdue Extension Seeks Youth To Participate In Food Challenge

Youth grades 3-8 will have the opportunity to learn about nutrition, budgeting, safe food preparation and teamwork next month thanks to Purdue Extension’s Indyouth Food Challenge.

Participants will put their problem solving skills to the test and compete in groups of 3-5 youth during a county “qualifier” Oct. 8 and then at the state contest at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Oct. 11.

Teams will be given mystery ingredients and challenged to prepare a dish, developing their own creative recipe with the ingredients provided. Teams will then discuss with a panel of judges the food safety practices used, the nutrients in their dish and a cost analysis of their recipe.  

Participants will attend four educational hands-on workshops prior to competing in the challenge. Purdue Extension Kosciusko County Health and Human Sciences Educator Jackie Franks will educate the participants on various aspects of Food Safety. Youth Development and 4-H Educator Mindy Wise will educate the participants on nutrition and budgeting. Workshops will be held Sept. 24, Sept. 27, Oct. 1, and Oct. 4.
