Warsaw Netters Win Season Opener

The Warsaw Tigers were able to weather the storm in more ways than one Wednesday evening.

Hosting the Huntington North Vikings in the boys tennis season opener, a match that started outdoors and was later moved indoors to Warsaw Tennis & Fitness Club because of rain, Warsaw overcame early losses at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to pull out a 3-2 win.

With the match score tied 2-2, the Tigers’ Caleb Williams secured the team’s first win of the season and the program’s first victory under new coach Stacy Lind when he beat Thomas Schweller 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

“Caleb went out there and did his job, he did great,” Lind said of Williams. “Both opponents played hard ... it was a great match.

“Caleb was focused, and he played one point at a time.”

Huntington North scored the first team point when Carson Kitchen beat Warsaw’s Hayden Anderson 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

The Vikings then pushed the Tigers up against the wall, taking a 2-0 match lead with Adam Zahn’s 6-2, 6-0 win over Reuben Williams at No. 2 singles.

The Tigers started their rally and scored their first team point with a three-set win in the No. 1 doubles match, as Warsaw’s Nolan Knight and Spencer Britton beat Noah Zahn and Clark Kitchen 6-1, 5-7, 6-0.

Warsaw then evened things when Jarrett Orr and Michael Ray beat Huntington North’s Spencer Atkinson and Isaac Eckert 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.

“Nolan and Spencer played well together as a team. They work well together,” said Lind. “They call where they’re going, they communicate. They really work well as a team.

“Michael and Jarrett did fantastic. They’ve never played together. Jarrett is more of a singles player, and he stepped up today. They just went out and played, and worked on what wasn’t working and made corrections. They came through.”

Because of the rain and limited space at Warsaw Tennis and Fitness Club, the junior varsity matches were not completed.

The Tigers are in action again today when they travel to Penn for a 5 p.m. match.
