The award was announced at the Wawasee School Board meeting Tuesday night.
Connor Lucas and Nick Lesko were members of the Warrior Leadership Committee and were tasked with a public service project. They decided they wanted to raise money for hurricane victims, and went on the campus radio station, 93.7 FM?The Mix, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 24.
The two funneled donations totaling more than $1,300 through Crowdwise, a crowdfunding website linked with the Red Cross.
The award will be presented Aug. 22 in South Bend.
The board voted to purchase five 78-passenger buses and one 14-passenger bus at a cost of $535,856. The corporation buys buses each year to keep them from wearing out all at once, and the state mandates buses be rotated out every 12 years. Wawasee maintains a 10-year rotation.
Transportation Director Mike Snavely said the corporation has 38 bus routes, and roughly 2,300 of the approximately 3,000 students in the district ride a bus to school daily. Snavely said each route has a driver, a rarity these days, and he is always looking for more drivers.
Late last month the Indiana State Police inspected all 58 buses in the Wawasee system, and Snavely said only one minor repair on one vehicle was needed to pass inspection.

A $2,000 donation was made to the corporation by the Wawasee Property Owners Association to cover student costs for an outdoor sports class for high school students. The class will be held at the Wawasee Yacht Club. Bill Pipp made the presentation on behalf of the WPOA.
Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington said the district received a $50,000 matching grant from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. The grant will match funds provided by the corporation for school safety up to $50,000. Up to $12,500 of the grant money can be used for a school resource officer, and $37,500 for equipment.
Edington added the district has 10 hand-held metal detectors spread among its buildings.
In other business, the board:
• Approved an overnight trip for the Wawasee FFA to Harrisburg, Pa., for a dairy judging contest.
• Heard the Wawasee Super-Mileage team finished third in the Shell Eco-Marathon competition in California last spring. Another Indiana team won, and a team of college students from Canada was second. Nineteen of the 23 students in the program made the trip to California.
• Approved the appointment of Deatra Kinney to the Milford Public Library board.
• Scheduled budget hearings for Tuesday.
The next Wawasee school board meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 11 in the Warrior Room of the high school.
