Spartans Have Eight Players To Watch In Preseason Poll

NORTH?MANCHESTER – Manchester University’s football team had eight athletes listed as “Players to Watch” in the 2018 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll.

Four seniors were named, including defensive back Dillon Nelson, defensive linemen Jacob Cooper and Garrett Walker, and offensive lineman Brady Nyland.

Running back Donovan Henderson Jr., wide receiver Austin Roberts and defensive lineman Nolan Sipe, all juniors, also were named, as was sophomore offensive lineman Connor Bettis.

Manchester will begin its season at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Trine University.



Manchester University To Hold Baseball Camp

NORTH?MANCHESTER – Manchester University will hold a skills camp for prospects from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Gratz Field.

The practice, which will follow a collegiate format, will be for sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school.

South Bend Cubs Edged By Loons

SOUTH?BEND – The South Bend Cubs fell to the Great Lakes Loons 4-3 Thursday at Four Winds Field.

Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning, South Bend took a 3-2 lead on the strength of runs by Brandon Hughes, Cam Balego and Clayton Daniel.

A 2-run home run by Deacon Liput put the Loons ahead for good, 4-3.

Reliever Brendan King pitched three innings andwas tagged with the loss. The Cubs will face the Loons again tonight at 7:35 p.m. at Four Winds Field.
