Warsaw resident Richard White (C) was named Kosciusko County Veteran of the Month for August. He graduated from Northfield High School near Wabash in 1965 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967. He completed basic training at Fort Campbell, Ky., and advanced infantry training at Fort McClellan in Alabama. He then completed non-commissioned officer school, and was trained to be a fire team leader in an infantry rifle platoon. He graduated from that training in January 1968 and was assigned to be a basic training instructor before getting orders to serve in Vietnam. He arrived there in April 1968 as a member of the 9th Infantry Division at Camp Bearcat in southeast Saigon. After his in-country training period, he was assigned to Bravo Company 3/39th where he would spend the rest of his time in Vietnam. He was wounded three times, the last and most serious wounds were in February 1969. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, three Purple Hearts, two air medals for helicopter assaults, two Army Commendation Medals For Meritorious Service and one for heroism. Once out of the Army, he served in multiple law enforcement roles, mostly in the public sector, until retiring. With White (L to R) are Rich Maron, Brad Jackson, Cary Groninger and Bob Conley.
