Goshen Man Arrested In Kosciusko County Counterfeiting Case

A Goshen man was arrested Monday in connection to counterfeit money being used at Kosciusko County gas stations and a restaurant.

Damian Lee Cassidy, 19, Goshen, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail Monday for failure to appear and counterfeiting, a level 6 felony. His preliminary bond was set at $5,250.

On June 3, North Webster Police officer David May responded to a report of somebody using a counterfeit $20 bill at a North Webster gas station. He spoke with the store manager, who showed him two $20 bills that May recognized as counterfeit. The manager said the first bill was received at 1:09 a.m. and the second was received at 3:05 a.m., both on June 3.

The manager provided May with a copy of the security video that showed a Ford Escape entering the parking lot at 1:07 a.m. and two women and two men entering the gas station. May was able to identify all the subjects as Brandy Allen, Cassidy, Kevin Gilmore and Amanda Kidd. Allen used the counterfeit bill at the store, according to court documents.

The store manager said the same Ford Escape arrived at 3:01 a.m. and Allen got out of the vehicle and entered the gas station and used a counterfeit $20 bill.

On June 5, NWPD officer Daniel Buell responded to the gas station after a report that Cassidy was back in the store. Cassidy said he was at the station around 1 a.m. June 3. He also said that on June 5 he was traveling in the Ford Escape with Gilmore, Kidd, Allen and Rachel Brickey. He said he and Brickey entered the gas station and the other three left them there. Cassidy said he didn’t know anything about the counterfeit bills being used.

Syracuse Police officer Joseph Keene obtained text messages that Cassidy sent to a confidential informant at 4:37 p.m. June 5. In the messages, Cassidy explains that he was left at the gas station and the police picked him up and interrogated him over the fake money. He said he was questioned about the bills passing a pen test and Cassidy said they cleared about $200 off a fast-food restaurant and gas stations. Cassidy admitted he did know about the counterfeit bills.

On June 5, SPD officer Gage Fannin responded to a counterfeit bill being used at a gas station in Syracuse. The manager said an employee received two counterfeit $20 bills.

On that same day, Churubusco Police arrested Gilmore and Allen, who had the Ford Escape. Officers found the vehicle had been reported stolen from Elkhart County. When officers searched Gilmore, they found a counterfeit $20. In the vehicle, they found a counterfeit $100, papers with U.S. currency printed on one side, a printer and scanner. Duct tape was on the scanner plate in the same dimensions as U.S. currency, according to court documents.

According to Kpcnews.com, Allen, 30, Mishawaka, was arrested for possession of paraphernalia, possession of methamphetamine, possession of hypodermic needles, auto theft and possession of a legend drug.

Gilmore, 35, Elkhart, was charged with possession of paraphernalia, possession of methamphetamine, operating with an altered interim plate, possession of hypodermic needles, counterfeiting, auto theft and possession of a legend drug.

Keene obtained surveillance video of the counterfeit bills being used.
