Sheriff Options

As a longtime area resident who was raised in a law enforcement environment, with a father who served as an attorney and judge, a brother who was an attorney, prosecutor and currently judge, I understand what is needed in the county’s top law enforcement official. My father the Honorable John C. Hagen, was a Noble County judge for two terms and practiced law in Syracuse for many years. He lived his entire adult life in Ligonier and gave back to his community through youth mentoring and character building. This was his legacy.
When my wife and I began looking at the prospective candidates for sheriff of Kosciusko County, I thought of my father. His work ethic and dedication to the law was never more evident than at the end of his life, battling terminal cancer, he was going to work when he passed away.
Recently I have read and heard many things, good and bad, about our choices for Kosciusko County sheriff.
Here is some of what I have heard: We need a fresh start, stay the course with what we have, we need experience, and he can learn as he goes.
Here are my thoughts:
One is our current sheriff, whom some say we need to change due to his association with the past administration.
One is currently a detective who I met at a recent event. He seemed like an amiable person who enjoys being a detective.
Another is a 17-year Indiana State trooper, and seems like a nice family man but lacks any personnel management experience and has never received a promotion.
The fourth candidate has 34 years of law enforcement experience, his last 10 years as Syracuse chief of police. This candidate, Tony Ciriello began his law enforcement career in Indianapolis and then moved to the state fire marshall’s office. Moving to Kosciusko County he joined the sheriffs department as a patrolman, then DARE officer. In 1998 he was promoted to corporal, in 2001 he was promoted to sergeant. In 2005 he joined the Syracuse Police Department as chief of police and retired in 2015.
After his distinguished law enforcement career he was elected Kosciusko County coroner, a capacity in which he still serves. Tony Ciriello is the only candidate that has been repeatedly promoted to positions of greater responsibility and personnel management.
With this in mind, my decision to support Tony Ciriello is clear. I feel leadership and departmental management is critical for the position of Kosciusko County sheriff.
When I listen to Tony Ciriello speak, the passion, experience, knowledge, leadership, and accountability are instilled in him just as there were in my father.
On May 8, 2018, my wife and I will be voting for Tony Ciriello for sheriff of Kosciusko county as he is just what we need and deserve in a sheriff.
Vote Tony Ciriello on May 8 because experience will matter.
Sincerely,
Kevin R. Hagen
