Lady Tigers Rally To Beat NorthWood

April 24, 2018 at 5:04 p.m.

NAPPANEE – The Warsaw Lady Tiger softball team staged a dramatic comeback on Monday night to defeat Northern Lakes Conference foe NorthWood 8-3.

Warsaw (5-4, 3-1 NLC) found itself down 1-0 through five innings of play when its offense came to life.

The Lady Tigers had the last two batters in the order coming up in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Hailey Locke led the inning off with a single and classmate Carmen Albertson followed with a single of her own.

Junior Katie Anderson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Sophomore Isabelle Dittmar stepped up to the plate and slugged a one-out triple to the right-center gap to clear the bases and give Warsaw a 2-1 lead.

Freshman Lindsey Bradley hit a ball back to the pitcher, who looked down Dittmar to make her stay at third and threw over to first to get the out. Dittmar broke for home and scored on a poor throw to the plate.

In the next inning, the Lady Tigers allowed NorthWood (5-4, 1-2 NLC) to claw back and tie things up. Freshman Lili Lomeli ripped a two-RBI single that knicked off Dittmar’s glove up the middle.

“She almost had it,” said Warsaw coach Kevin Dishman. “She played excellent tonight at shortstop for us. It went off her mitt and that’s part of the game.”

The Lady Tigers regained the lead in the top of the seventh when junior Carmen Albertson singled to score junior Adara Frey from third. Warsaw tacked on four more runs on hits from Lindsey Bradley, Saylor Bradley and Anderson during the inning to seal the deal.

Warsaw had two hits in the first five innings and added nine in the last two frames en route to scoring eight runs.

“We spent more time in the gym hitting in the cage than we did anything else,” Dishman said.

Dishman attributes the team’s success to being confident and playing as a team.

“That’s something they’re good at,” he said. “Its a small group, but we like that. You look to this person, you look to this person and it’s just us and everyone has to contribute. It’ll really help us in the long run.”

The Lady Tigers are still living their motto by playing good defense and to commit no more than two errors in a game.

“Our main concern all game was to make sure we were playing defense,” Dishman said. “When we have two or less errors we usually win.”

Warsaw stayed true to the message and didn’t tally a single mistake on defense.

Junior Courtney Chookie was in the circle for the Lady Tigers and threw a complete game. She struck out two batters and allowed eight hits.

Senior Saylor Bradley, freshman Lindsey Bradley and Albertson tallied two hits each for Warsaw.

The Lady Tigers missed a few more chances to add some runs to help their cause. On two occasions, runners were called out for leaving the base early and both times were the third out in the inning.

Warsaw has now won three NLC games in a row since losing to Goshen in the opener. The Lady Tigers play at NLC rival Northridge on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Chip Shots: How Callous IS It?
For every 700 to 1,000 words of mine you read on any given Saturday, I have a list of callous, cynical thoughts and remarks I can make about the topics I discuss… easily five-fold of what I allow past my filter and, in turn, e-mail to my editor.
