Butler Leads Triton Golfers Past Tigers

If Monday evening's high school boys golf match at Stonehenge were a game of Clue, the winning answer would be the butler did it.

As in Triton High School's Chase Butler.

With a 1-over par score of 37 on Stonehenge's back nine, Butler led the Trojans to a four-man score of 163 and a one-stroke victory over the Warsaw Tigers.

Butler's round included six pars, a birdie on the par-5 No. 11, and bogeys on par-4 holes 14 and 16.

“Great round for that kid,” Triton assistant coach Blake Schori said of Butler. “Extremely happy to see him shoot that.

“This is really his first year of full-time varsity experience. You look at him, he’s very short, and you just don’t expect a kid like that, but he’s been very very consistent to start out the season. I think he’s second on our team in 9-hole averages right now. The kid can play ... he definitely showed it today, especially in these conditions.”

Beau Hepler and Isaac Wall shot 41s for Triton, while Brock Watkins carded a 44. Keegan Westafer rounded out the Trojans’ lineup with a 52.

Sam Yeager led Warsaw with a 39, while Tommy Meier and Jacob LaLonde shot 41s, and Luke Delp and Zach LaLonde carded 43s.

“Given the weather, I think both teams played pretty respectable today,” said Warsaw coach Rich Haddad.

“You have to give a hand to Chase, he shot a career round today, 1-over on the back nine at Stonehenge, great round of golf. I think he was the difference maker.

“We had a pretty good round out of Sam. The rest of the guys were OK, but not great today. Triton nipped us ... congrats to them.”

For years, the Tigers have had an advantage over their opponents at Stonehenge because of their familiarity of the challenging links style course.

Triton now plays its home matches at Stonehenge, leaving Rozella Ford, and proved Monday its young team is one to be reckoned with on the course that hosts the regional.

“I think it’s huge,” Schori said of the move to Stonehenge. “In the summer time we spend a lot of time out here, too. I think transitioning over here this year, being able to play out here every day, pays huge dividends. I think that kind of showed today.”

The Trojans are 4-1 in 9-hole matches this season, while Warsaw is 3-2.

The Tigers, who entered Monday’s match on the heels of shooting a 312 in the Lake Central Invitational over the weekend, the team’s best 18-hole round of the season, travel to Fort Wayne Wednesday to play Carroll at Autumn Ridge Golf Club.

Triton will play in the Marshall County Match Saturday.

In JV?action Monday, Warsaw beat Triton 196-205.

Chase Byron led the JV?Tigers with a 38, while Ross Johnson led Triton’s JV?squad with a 50.
