Potpourri: Creighton's Strikes A Balance With Signs
April 21, 2018 at 2:09 a.m.
A recent item in Potpourri eluded to what might have appeared to be an endorsement by Creighton Bros. of Republican candidate for county commissioner DeLynn Geiger after Geiger placed a big campaign sign outside of the company’s office and Creighton’s Crazy Egg restaurant west of Warsaw.
Well, that didn’t settle well with Commissioner Bob Conley, who is running for re-election and faces a primary challenge by Geiger. Conley worked side by side for years with former commissioner Ron Truex, who is president of Creighton’s.
Truex, who stepped down as commissioner last year, said none of the signs should be viewed as an endorsement and admits to having an open door policy on candidates seeking to put signs in front of the business.
Truex, meanwhile, said he’s enjoying his view from the sidelines and said he’s flattered that people actually seem to care what he thinks about candidates.
Other endorsements – Indiana Right To Life is not endorsing the most ardent pro-life lawmaker in Indiana. The group recently released a list of candidates who’ve won their support and District 22 State Rep. Curt Nisly is not on the list despite previously being there.
Nisly, who has led the charge for a legislative effort to make “Protection at Conception” a state law – a move that would outlaw all abortions – is now closely aligned with Hoosiers for Life, which is actively campaigning for candidates who support the complete ban.
At the same time, the group did not endorse Nisly’s Republican challenger, Kimberly Cates, who is also pro-life, but lacks a legislative track record on the matter.
Nisly’s legislative approach and support for the extreme bill has angered some Republicans who have now begun routinely referring to those who support Protection at Conception as “abortion abolitionists.”
Elkhart Influence – Here’s two more endorsements from big names in Elkhart County.
Brad Rogers, the outgoing sheriff of Elkhart County and a well-known constitutionalist, has endorsed Nisly.
‘When I endorsed Curt Nisly in 2014, I wanted someone who would stand for the Constitutional rights of all Hoosiers, not just those in his district.” Rogers said.
“As Representative Nisly has constantly demonstrated, when he says he’ll defend our Constitutional rights, he means it. Whether it’s the Second Amendment or the First Amendment, Curt Nisly is what his district needs, and I am proud to stand with Curt,”
The other endorsement involves Second District Congressional Democratic candidate Mel Hall who received a tip of the hat from the four-term retired mayor of Goshen, Allan Kauffman.

“I am enthusiastic in my support for Mel Hall in this primary election not only because I believe he has the best chance to win in November, but also because of the life he has led up to now,” Kauffman said in a news release issued by the Hall campaign.
OOPS – ?Kosciusko County sheriff candidate Kyle Dukes experienced a misstep recently with a campaign advertisement. A caller to the newspaper pointed out that an ad in the Times-Union was missing the required line explaining who paid for the ad.
The Indiana state trooper blamed it on an oversight and noted that all other literature complies with election law.
“The disclaimer was inadvertently left off a recent ad. All campaign ads have been paid for by the Committee To Elect Dukes Sheriff,” Dukes said in a statement issued Friday.
Save The Date – The Kosciusko County Republican Party annual Lincoln Day Dinner will be Friday at the Wagon Wheel Events Center, 2517 E. Center St., Warsaw. Social time is 5:30 p.m. and dinner is at 6:30 p.m.
The guest speaker will be U.S. Sen. Todd Young.
