Wawasee set the tone right away with five runs in the top of the first inning, and later scored seven runs over the sixth and seventh innings to beat the host Tigers 16-11.
Thursday’s contest was played in chilly, windy conditions, though both teams’ offenses warmed up and combined for 27 hits and 27 runs.
“It was a real resilient job by our guys,” said Wawasee coach Brent Doty, whose team improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the NLC?standings.
“We scored five in the first, and then let them crawl back into it. We just had to sharpen up the defense, and then the bats came alive again there in the middle innings, which we needed, and we continued to add runs here and there. This is a good team win for us.”
The Tigers plated six runs in the second inning and led 7-5 after three frames.
Wawasee regained the lead with three runs in the fourth inning, and then scored once in the fifth, six times in the sixth and once in the seventh.
Facing an eight-run deficit, Warsaw scored two runs in the sixth innings and two more in the seventh inning.
Though the Tigers struggled with pitching and defense, something coach Mike Hepler said has been commonplace this season, they’ve averaged a little more than eight runs per game.
Warsaw, however, only has a 2-3 record to show for it and is 0-2 in the NLC.
“We need to improve our pitching and our defense,” said Hepler. “That’s kind of been the theme the first five games ... we just haven’t played well in those two areas. We’re playing long games, we’re playing two and a half hour games and we’re giving up a lot of runs, especially some unearned runs, that shouldn’t be happening.
“It’s making it difficult for us offensively to come back. We’ve swung the bat pretty well over the stretch that we’ve had, but we’re struggling and we’re up against it with the pitching and defense. And it’s not like guys aren’t getting opportunities, they’re just not executing.”
Wawasee used two pitchers in the game, with Carter Woody getting the win after five innings of work on the mound before being replaced by Jacob Garcia.
Warsaw, on the other hand, put seven pitchers on the mound.
Matt Shapiro lasted one inning, giving up five hits and five runs, while walking one and striking out two.
In their five-run first inning, the Warriors scored on a throwing error as well as a balk.
Ian Glogovsky, who was charged with the loss, Noah Burgh, Michael Nunez, Avery Remocaldo, Matt Shoemaker and Royce Smith all threw in relief.
“We had a tough spell of it,” Hepler said of his team’s struggles on the mound. “The weather hasn’t helped. That’s not an excuse, we’re just not playing well. You throw walks and wild pitches into the mix ... and Wawasee did a great job of hitting the ball tonight. You have to credit them, they swung the bat very well.
“But, I really like the battle our kids showed today. We could have just rolled over and died. Our kids hung in there, we took the lead after Wawasee’s big first inning. We showed some toughness tonight, we’re just not executing very well right now.”
Wawasee pounded out 15 hits in the win, led by Garcia’s 4-for-4 performance that included a double and four RBIs.
Levi Brown and Jairus Boyer had three hits each for Wawasee, while Jamie Slabaugh hit a triple and a double, and Jeremiah Bess hit a double.
For Warsaw, Liam Patton had three hits, including a double, and Kyle Kuhn finished with two of the Tigers’ 12 hits.
Glogovsky and Burgh laced doubles for Warsaw, while Jared Hawley hit a triple.
The Tigers are in action again today at Plymouth.
Wawasee hosts NorthWood today.
