Triton Baseball Notches First Hoosier North Victory

CULVER – The Triton baseball team defeated Culver Community 4-3 on Thursday in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference opener.

The Trojans scored two runs in the top of the seventh to complete the comeback.

Ty Ferry tallied the win for the Trojans (2-2, 1-0 HNAC). He pitched two innings and struck out two Cavaliers (1-3, 0-1 HNAC).

Dylan Hensley led all Triton batters with two hits. He knocked in one RBI. Teammate Vincent Helton had the other RBI of the contest.

Triton plays at Hoosier North foe Pioneer on Saturday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.

Warsaw Loses NLC Opener

GOSHEN – The Warsaw Tiger baseball team fell 7-3 at Goshen on Wednesday in the Northern Lakes Conference opener.

Warsaw (2-2, 0-1 NLC) scored three runs in the last two innings to try and make a comeback.

The RedHawks (6-1. 1-0 NLC) entered the scoring column first with a two-run first inning and then tacked on five more runs in the third and fourth innings.

Both teams were even in hits at five. The Tigers were able to force five Goshen errors in the contest.

Drake Graham started on the mound for Warsaw and took the loss.

The Tigers host Wawasee tonight in an NLC contest.

Valley Comes Up Short At Maconaquah

BUNKER HILL – The Tippecanoe Valley baseball team lost 7-4 to Maconaquah on Wednesday.

The Vikings (1-2, 0-1 TRC) staged a last-inning comeback and scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough.

Maconaquah (2-3, 1-0 TRC) scored six runs by the end of the fourth inning and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

Drew Hartman tallied a double for Valley. He had two RBIs in the contest.

Adam Myers struck out three batters and stole two bases for the Vikings. 

Valley plays at Pioneer tonight. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.

WABASH – The Whitko baseball team lost 8-4 at Southwood on Wednesday. Both teams began its Three Rivers Conference season.

River West took the loss for the Wildcats (1-4, 0-1 TRC). He threw five innings and struck out five Southwood (1-2, 1-0 TRC) batters.

Evan Wilson slugged a double. Austin Hollowell, Kyle Knutson, Mason Lehman and Zakk Neer all had hits for Whitko.

The Wildcats play at New Haven tonight. The contest begins at 5 p.m.

Peru Hands Manchester First TRC Loss

PERU – The Manchester baseball team’s late rally fell short to the hands of Peru on Wednesday. The Tigers won 5-3 in the Three Rivers Conference matchup.

The Squires (1-2, 0-1 TRC) scored two runs in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 5-3. The team had the winning run at the plate, but Peru (5-0, 1-0 TRC) was able to strike the batter out and win the game.

Jeremiah Airgood had two hits and two RBIs for Manchester. Mason Roberts and Noah Beck added two hits each.

The Squires travel to Columbia City on Friday.

Lady Tigers Fall To Goshen

The Warsaw softball team’s late comeback was not enough as Goshen won 11-9 on Wednesday.

In the Northern Lakes Conference opener, the Lady Tigers (2-4, 0-1 NLC) had a 2-1 lead after the first two innings. Goshen (5-3, 1-0 NLC) scored four runs over the next two and secured a lead.

The Lady Tigers evened things up at five in the fifth inning, but the Lady RedHawks tallied six runs in the last two frames to take the win.

Courtney Chookie had seven strikeouts while in the circle. Isabelle Dittmar had a couple hits and RBIs for Warsaw.

The Lady Tigers play at Wawasee tonight. First pitch is at 5 p.m.

Howard Leads Valley In Three Rivers Opener

AKRON – The Tippecanoe Valley softball team won 3-0 over Maconaquah on Wednesday. 

Sydney Howard pitched a complete game shutout and struck out four batters for the Lady Vikings (2-2, 0-1 TRC). At the plate, she crushed a triple and had two RBIs to help the cause. She finished with the team’s only two hits.

Howard didn’t walk a single Maconaquah (1-4, 0-1 TRC) batter and allowed five hits.

The Lady Vikings play at Adams Central on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Triton Golf Wins At Stonehenge

The Triton boys golf team won a three-team event on Wednesday at Stonehenge Golf Course.

The Trojans had a score of 161. Second-place John Glenn scored 190 and Mishawaka had a team score of 219.

Triton’s Beau Hepler was the medalist with a score of 38. Chase Butler tied for second at 39. Isaac Wall (40), Brock Watkins (44) and Keegan Westafer (46) rounded out the scoring for Triton.

The Trojans junior varsity team won against John Glenn and Mishawaka. Triton had a team score of 184.

The Triton varsity team is in a four-way match tonight at Plymouth. Tee time is set for 4:30 p.m.



Wawasee Golf Defeats Central Noble

KENDALLVILLE – The Wawasee boys golf team won 178-212 against Central Noble.

Despite the cold, rainy and windy conditions, Dalton Drake was the medalist for the Warriors (1-0) as he shot a score of 41.

Zach Leechy shot a 43. Evan Dippon (46), Jared Krugman (48) and Luke Weisser (52) each competed for Wawasee.

The Warriors play next on Saturday at the Whitko Invitational.



Lady Tiger Tennis Sweeps NLC Foe Northridge

The Warsaw Lady Tiger tennis team defeated Northridge 5-0 on Wednesday.

The closest match at the contest was on the No. 1 doubles court. Taylor Shoaf and Libby Jenkins allowed the Lady Raiders No. 2 doubles pair to score five points in two sets.

In the No. 1 singles match, Liza Lewis won 6-1, 6-0. Ella Knight won 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles slot. Alyssa Zellers tallied a point by winning 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles position.

Reagan Merchant and Rachel Yeager won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Warsaw hosts Fairfield tonight. The match begins at 4:30 p.m.

GOSHEN – The Wawasee girls track and field team lost to Plymouth and Goshen on Wednesday in a Northern Lakes Conference meet.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Ella Beezley, Nadia Palacious Bailey Mayhew and McKenzie Smith won the event with a time of 10:57.30. They finished 51 seconds ahead of second place.

Smith finished first in the 800-meter race for Wawasee. She crossed the line in 2:40.77. She also had a third-place nod in the 1600-meter event.

Mayhew ended second in the 400-meter dash for the Lady Warriors. In the 200-meter sprint, Mayhew finished in fourth.

Sara Pritchard finished second in the discus event with a throw of 97 feet, 9 inches. She also tallied fourth in the shot put.

Casey Schroeder jumped 14 feet, 5-1/4 inches in the long jump to land in third place.

Wawasee is back in action on Saturday at the Churubusco Relays.

Boys basketball season returned to the Hardwood Teepee Tuesday night as Wawasee tipped off the season for area teams by hosting rival Fairfield. Things were incredibly close for most of the game, with the Falcons extending their lead in the second half. The Warriors made a furious comeback in the final minutes, but it was too little too late as the visitors emerged with a 46-43 win.
