April 14, 2018 at 2:53 a.m.

A Leesburg man was arrested Tuesday after stealing $2,100 worth of items from his employer.

Ryan Arthur Smith, 34, of 117 EMS T16 Lane, Leesburg, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday for theft, a level 6 felony. His preliminary bond was set for $600.

On Monday, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department officer James Marshall responded to a theft at Maple Leaf Farms. Upon arrival, he spoke with a woman who said that on March 22 she received information from several different sources that Smith had been stealing items from the Maple Leaf maintenance shop, according to court documents filed Friday. She said Smith admitted to the Maple Leaf manager that he did take the company’s property home but was just borrowing the items.

KCSD officer Shane Bucher watched surveillance video from March 22 showing a Maple Leaf truck leaving the property with a pallet jack and coming back to the property without it.

Bucher spoke with Smith who admitted he had stolen the items from Maple Leaf and provided them to Bucher. Items stolen were valued at $2,100 and included a pallet jack, air tank, die grinder, brake spring, jack stands and a wire welder.

Smith’s initial hearing was set for 1 p.m. April 27 in Kosciusko Superior Court II.
