In the first meet of the season, the Warsaw boys track and field team defeated Elkhart Memorial 66-61 Thursday evening.

The meet would’ve been the Tigers’ second of the season, but with the poor weather, the meet before spring break was canceled. The team is still trying to figure some things out.

“If we would’ve been able to run at Penn before spring break, we would’ve been able to figure a lot of things out,” said Warsaw  coach Matt Thacker. “We looked really rusty.”

The bright spot for the Tigers came in the field events, where they won three events and swept the top three spots in discus. John  Svinarich won the shot put and discus for Warsaw.

He threw the shot 48 feet, 4-1/2 inches to capture first, nearly seven feet farther than second place.

“We did really well in the shot put,” said Thacker. “That’s really good to see.”

Svinarich had the same outcome in the discus, throwing just a shade under seven feet farther than second place with a toss of 141 feet, 1 inch.

Connor Lennox soared 6 feet, 2 inches in the high jump for first place and teammate Tyler Metzinger leaped 6 feet for second.

In the long jump, Jayton Brock missed first place by a quarter of an inch, as he landed 18 feet, 7 inches from the jumping pad for second place.

“We’re really young in the long jump,” Thacker said. “Their steps were off tonight. They don’t know how to counteract that, but that’s just part of being young.”

Western Illinois University commit Lucas Howett had the last win of the night for the Tigers, receiving crucial points for the team. He finished 11 seconds quicker in the 3200-meter race than second place.

Howett was in third place after the first lap and was able to climb up to first after three circuits. On the fourth lap, he slipped back to third place, but sprinted back to the front during the fifth and stayed there the rest of the way until the finish.

“Lucas ran his heart out tonight” said Thacker.

For the sprinters, Alijah Wade tallied 10 points with two first-place finishes at the meet. He won the 100 and 200-meter dashes. The closest race was in the 100, where he ran 11.43 seconds and second place had a time of 11.60. In the 200, he crossed the line in 23.09 seconds.

Eli Owen won the 300-meter hurdles by a fraction of a second. His time of 43.25 seconds was a hair quicker than second place, who finished in 43.84 seconds. He finished second in the 110-meter hurdles.

The 4x100-meter relay for both teams were disqualified. Warsaw had a mishap on the first exchange and handed off too late and was flagged. Coming off the last hand off for Elkhart Memorial, the third runner crossed into Warsaw’s running lane and bumped into the fourth runner, causing Warsaw’s Keagan Larsh to stumble and slow down.

The Tigers are back in action tonight at the Lafayette Jefferson Showcase. The meet is slated to begin at 5 p.m.

Chip Shots: How Callous IS It?
For every 700 to 1,000 words of mine you read on any given Saturday, I have a list of callous, cynical thoughts and remarks I can make about the topics I discuss… easily five-fold of what I allow past my filter and, in turn, e-mail to my editor.
