Triton Netters Beat Tippecanoe Valley

April 12, 2018 at 4:30 p.m.

AKRON – On Wednesday night, the Triton girls tennis team won 4-1 over Tippecanoe Valley.

In what was the season opener for each team, the Lady Trojans saw victories from their No. 1 and No. 2 singles players and both doubles en route to the victory.

Valley had Makenna Bradley win in straight sets in the No. 3 singles slot.

The wind played a factor for each squad, as it caused havoc on each player and determined how one would play a ball, whether the wind was to their front or back.

“We played well tonight,” said Triton coach Allen Peckham. “The wind was pretty tricky tonight, but it was a good start tonight for us.”

Both teams were itching to get back outside after the bad weather the area has been having lately, which has forced practices to be canceled or held inside.

“Going into a gym and playing doesn’t give tennis any justice,” said Valley coach Andrew Luce. “It’s very difficult to do that, especially with the team I have that has a lot of brand new players. They need to be able get on the court and see exactly how to play the game”

Triton visits the elementary school for indoor practices and has to hit against the wall and toss some balls to them for practice.

“We try to do a little bit so we make sure they get some hits,” Peckham said. “But it’s pretty hard to get outside to do stuff.”

At the No. 1 singles spot for the Lady Trojans, Kolbie Mason didn’t allow a single point and defeated Lea Stouder 6-0 and 6-0 to claim a point for the team.

“(Lea) played a very good player,” said Luce. “It just wasn’t her night.”

In the No. 2 singles matchup, Tiphanie Hodge of the Lady Vikings jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first set, but Molly McFarland bounced back and grabbed the lead at 3-1. After some back and forth scoring, McFarland won the first set 6-3 and swept the next one 6-0 to win the Lady Trojans another point.

Valley’s lone point came in the No. 3 singles contest, with Bradley playing a tough opponent in Amanda Baker. Bradley and Baker were even at 1-1 in the first set, but Bradley went on a run and pushed the lead to 4-1 and eventually won the set 6-2.

Bradley kept her scoring streak alive in the second set and jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead, before giving up two straight points to Baker. Bradley calmed down and scored the next point to win the set 6-2 and the point for the Lady Vikings.

Triton’s No. 1 doubles pairing of Hannah Wanemacher and Emma Ross allowed one point in the two sets they played, winning 6-0 and 6-1.

Triton’s Megan McFarland and Emma Hepler won 6-1 and 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Valley will be back on the court tonight, as the team travels to Knox for a 5:30 p.m. contest. Triton competes at the Plymouth Invitational on Saturday. The Invite begins at 9:30 a.m.
