Griffin Forrest Sterling, 41, Plymouth, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 7:33 p.m. Wednesday for strangulation. His preliminary bond was set at $6,500.
Court documents filed in February list the charges against him as strangulation, a level 6 felony; domestic battery with moderate bodily injury, a level 6 felony; and intimidation, a level 6 felony.
On Feb. 18, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Joel Popenfoose responded to a battery complaint at the Warsaw Parkview Hospital.
The victim had bruises on her legs, arms, hands, back, neck and forehead. She also had a scrape on her nose, according to court documents filed Feb. 23.
She told Popenfoose that during the evening of Feb. 17, she and her boyfriend, Sterling, were at her Kosciusko County residence when they began to argue. He became angry and used his fists to hit her several times. He put his hands around her neck and squeezed to the point she passed out. She reported the bruises on her back were a result of Sterling kicking her while she was lying on the floor.
While holding a meat cleaver, Sterling told the victim that if she said anything about it to her daughter or police, he would kill her.
Popenfoose spoke with the victim’s daughter who said her mother told her Sterling beat and strangled her to the point she lost consciousness.
Popenfoose then drove to the victim’s residence to speak with Sterling but he refused to answer the door. After the victim was discharged from the hospital, Popenfoose accompanied her to her residence where she gave him permission to enter.
Sterling was found upstairs with a swollen right hand, according to court documents. He said he hurt it punching the floor. Officers found a hatchet with a blue handle lying near the bed.
