KOKOMO – Despite freezing temperatures, Grace College’s women’s golf team opened the spring season with a hot start.

The Lady Lancers won the six-team IU-Kokomo Classic on Monday at Kokomo Country Club, shooting a 333 as a team.

Grace’s Lauren Keiser finished as the runner-up on the individual leaderboard with an 81, and Sydney Abbott was third by carding an 82.

“I was really proud of the girls for keeping focus in really difficult conditions. We finished the fall with a nice win at Mt. Vernon, and this is a great way to start our spring,” said Grace head coach Denny Duncan.

“We’ve only had two outside practices so far, so to shoot 333 in brutal conditions is pretty remarkable. Lauren and Sydney led us, and I was especially pleased for Rachel Harvey, who worked really hard all winter and shot 87 today.”

Grace had to wait three hours in the morning as unexpected snow needed to melt off the course. The Lady Lancers powered through the cold temperatures, however, and won the tournament by five strokes over second-place IU-Kokomo.

Anna Marshall’s 84 and Kristin Holt’s 86 secured a winning score for Grace, and Libby Tully’s 90 rounded out the team’s scoring.

The Lady Lancers are in action Friday and Saturday the Pilot Invitational at Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend.
