Potpourri: Miner Interested In Being New Court's First Judge

April 7, 2018 at 2:00 a.m.

With an apparent commitment from the state to fund a new court in Kosciusko County, look for a few people to express interest in serving as the first judge of the new court.

The first clear-cut sign of interest was heard Wednesday at the county GOP fish fry, when county attorney Chad Miner said that he will likely apply for the post.

County officials could, if they choose, establish the court as soon as next summer, and a judge would be appointed by the governor to serve until the first election opportunity arrives.

Miner said he’s excited about the prospect of helping establish the new court.

Miner ran for a judgeship for Superior Court 1 a few years ago against David Cates.

Endorsements – Based on comments and observations at Wednesday’s fish fry, here are a handful of endorsements.

• Warsaw Police Chief Scott Whitaker was seen wearing a Kyle Dukes for Sheriff hat at the fish fry. The symbolism is the latest sign that Warsaw Police would like to see an outsider take over the sheriff’s department.

• A sign outside of Creighton’s Crazy Egg restaurant supports DeLynn Geiger for southern district against incumbent Republican Bob Conley. The president of Creighton’s Eggs is former commissioner Ron Truex, who stepped down recently.

• When Tea Party activist Monica Boyer ran into Rep. Todd Rokita, she made it clear she plans on endorsing him in his U.S. Senate run. Her main reason? He stood up and opposed the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill that President Donald Trump signed recently.

New office – With a handful of competitive races in the Republican primary, Kosciusko County’s Republicans have opened a headquarters at 123 W. Center St., which is the corner of Center and Lake streets in Warsaw. The office will open beginning Monday.

The decision to open the office stems from the strong interest from voters for signs for numerous candidates, said county GOP Chairman Mike Ragan.

Kosciusko Bound – State Rep. Curt Nisly and his family will be moving from Elkhart County to the northern part of Kosciusko County in the near future.

There are several reasons for the move, but Nisly’s favorite is that his new home south of Milford in Van Buren Township offers what is probably one of the lowest tax rates in the state.

Political Calendar – Here’s a few things going on next week in politics:

• State Rep. Dave Wolkins will host an open house at 5 p.m Friday at the Winona Heritage Room, 901 Park Ave., Winona Lake.

• Democrats will host another debate for three Dems seeking to run against 2nd District Republican Jackie Walorski. The debate will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lerner Theatre in Elkhart.

That’s the second Dem debate in the district  that had to be shifted to a larger venue to accommodate a large audience.

• Deadline to register to vote in the Indiana primary is Monday. You can do that by going to indianavoters.com.
