Tigers Win Three Matches In 1st Round Of NLC Tourney

DUNLAP – Warsaw earned wins in three positions in Wednesday’s opening round of the Northern Lakes Conference boys tennis tournament.

Wawasee was winless in its five matches.

No. 1 Singles

Fourth-seeded Colton Lind won 6-1, 6-0 for the Tigers over Brandon Bailey of Elkhart Memorial. Lind will take on top-seeded Wes Boyer of host Concord in the semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket, the Warriors’ Dylan Staley fell 6-2, 6-0 to second-seeded Simon Grevengoed of Northridge. Staley faces Plymouth’s Tommy Holloway in the consolation semis.

No. 1 Doubles

The Tigers’ Bailey Buhrt and Spencer Britton are the top seed, and they rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Memorial’s Chris Troyer and Mike Troyer. In the semifinals the Tiger duo will take on Concord’s fourth-seeded team of Travis Herman and Cal Whitaker, who beat Wawasee’s Jake Krugman and Jake Cowan 6-1, 6-2 to advance.

Krugman and Cowan will play Memorial’s Troyer and Troyer in the consolation bracket.

No. 2 Doubles

Third-seeded Nolan Knight and Reuben Williams of Warsaw advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Memorial’s Pierre Archie and Lukas Knauss. The Tiger team will play NorthWood’s Trevor Klotz and Trajan Schwartz in the semis.

Evan Richey and Brady Robinson fell 6-0, 6-0 to Goshen’s Drake Crowder and Tony Le. The Warrior tandem will match up with Northridge’s Connor Glenn and Avery Mantyla in consolation play.

No. 2 Singles

Kyler Bartol of Warsaw fell 6-1, 6-2 to No. 1 seed Nate Slabach of Concord. Bartol faces Memorial’s Bradley Mendez in the consolation bracket, opposite of the match between Wawasee’s Zach Leedy and NorthWood’s Ben Vincent. Leedy was blanked 6-0, 6-0 by Northridge’s Gabe Rodino.

No. 3 Singles

Wawasee’s Graham Perek lost 6-0, 6-0 to Northridge’s Cooper Tavernier, while Warsaw’s Caleb Williams dropped a 6-4, 6-1 match to NorthWood’s Jack Wysong.

Perek plays Plymouth’s Andy Rostron in the consolation, and Williams will take on Memorial’s Rickey Hoover.

Semifinals are scheduled for today at Concord, with finals set for Saturday in Plymouth.



Trojans Advance In Conference Tourney

KNOX – Triton Trojan boys tennis players won in all five positions in the opening round of the Hoosier North Athletic Conference tournament Wednesday.

At No. 1 singles, Carter Kuntz beat North Judson’s Briker Stayrook for the third time this season, this time by a 6-4, 6-0 score. John Gardner won 6-4, 6-2 over Hayden Kaminski of North Judson at No. 2 singles.

Trevor Miller needed three sets to earn a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win over North Judson’s Blake Shell at No. 3 singles.

Keygan Mosier and Chase Butler didn’t lose a game at No. 1 doubles, winning over Dan Clingaman and James Michaels of LaVille.

Tyler Heckaman and Jared Bules advanced by forfeit at No. 2 doubles.

The championship rounds are today at Knox.



Braves Edge Vikings

AKRON – Eric Wright won at No. 2 singles for Tippecanoe Valley, and Payton Mills and Dakota Parker won in three sets at No. 1 doubles for the Vikings in their 3-2 Three Rivers Conference boys tennis loss to Maconaquah Wednesday.

Wright beat Zach Reyburn 6-2, 6-4. Mills and Parker won 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 over Hunter Hays and Maverick Butler.

The Vikings play at Manchester in a conference match today.



Whitko Swept By Wabash

SOUTH WHITLEY – In their final Three Rivers Conference boys tennis match of the season the Whitko Wildcats lost 5-0 to visiting Wabash Wednesday.

Whitko will host Churubusco in a non-conference match at 5 p.m. Monday.
