Lady Tigers, Fishel Advance To Golf Regional

Or, in other words, that point in the season when surviving and advancing is the emphasis.
Survive and advance is exactly what Warsaw's varsity girls golf team, as well as Lakeland Christian Academy's Abigail Fishel, did at Saturday’s sectional at Stonehenge.
The top three teams, as well as the top three individuals not on an advancing team qualified for Saturday's regional at Noble Hawk Golf Links in Kendallville.
The Lady Tigers finished third with a four-player score of 377, while Fishel carded a 90 and secured an individual berth. Plymouth teammates Brittany Klotz and Jenna Nifong finished at 91 and 93, respectively, to earn the other two individual berths.
Bremen and NorthWood tied for the top team score at 353, with Bremen winning its first sectional title by virtue of a fifth-player tiebreaker.
Warsaw was third, followed by Wawasee (405), Plymouth (428), Triton (441), Rochester (477), Whitko (527) and Tippecanoe Valley (548).
Bremen’s Lexi Miller and NorthWood’s Mackenzie Weaver both shot 81, with Miller winning medalist honors after a playoff.
“The round got off to a bumpy start, but I’m proud of the way they stuck with it and stayed patient,” said Warsaw coach Tad Nieter.
“Our girls have improved quite a bit in letting the round come to them and not pressing or losing patience, especially in 18-hole tournaments. The girls posted the lowest 18-hole score for our team since I took over, which was on a big stage, at a difficult course, and after losing our top two seniors (from last year).
“I was very proud of each of them. Grayson Kilburn poster her career-best while playing on an injured hip. She has to get surgery on it, but chose to wait until the season is completed. It’s been an issue for quite some time. For her to come out and play strong for us is huge.”
Kilburn led the Lady Tigers with an 88, while Delaney Wihebrink shot 91, Isabel Ray 93, Madelyn Ray 105 and Miriam Hagg 108.
“Although we are young and don’t have any seniors, Delaney Wihebrink, Izzy Ray and Madelyn Ray all have three years of varsity experience,” said Nieter. “They are still learning , but do a great job grinding out rounds to turn in solid numbers. They have been phenomenal leaders for our young team this year.”
Wawasee was led by Lesley Tayagua’s 98, while Jadison Rostochak shot 99, Tate Cowan 101, Zoe White 107 and Belle Brunner 121.
“We didn’t quite make it out (of the sectional) this year,” said Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone. “But we have young team, and they gave it their best shot ... good rounds by Lesley and Jadison. Also, good effort by Tate.”
Whytnie Miller led Triton with a 107, while Makayla Sandbakken paced Valley with a 110 and Summer West was tops for Whitko with a 121.
En route to their first sectional title in program history, the Bremen Lady Lions were the picture of consistency.
To go with Miller’s medalist round of 81, Hannah Rowe carded a 90, while teammates Caitlyn Myers, Bailey Fritter and Sara Knepper all shot 91.
“I can’t be any happier than what we came up with today,” said Bremen coach Don Harrison. “The girls played their hearts out. We left some strokes out on the course that we probably shouldn’t have taken, but they didn’t let it get in their heads like they have the past couple times we’ve been down here, and they played strong all the way through.”
NorthWood’s runner-up finish included Weaver’s 81, Madison Richner’s 85, Abby Slabaugh’s 92 and Hope Cripe’s 95. Abigail Richner rounded out the Lady Panther’s lineup with a 109.
“Our two goals every year are to put ourselves in position to win the NLC, we did that, and to get to the regional, we did that,” said NorthWood coach Adam Yoder.
“The last two times we went to state we didn’t we the sectional either. That’s a good superstitious thing to have going into the regional, but there’s no question we have to play better to get to state.
“I’m really happy for Bremen’s program, Don does a good job.”
