NORTH MANCHESTER – Moving on from last week’s nail-biter of a loss to Peru, the Manchester High School football team hosted Three Rivers Conference and Wabash County rival Northfield for homecoming Friday night.

The 2017 homecoming game was one the Squires would like to quickly forget.

Northfield scored just over half their total points in the third quarter as the Norse cruised to a 70-22 victory.

Between the penalties (11 for 107 yards), turnovers and the Squire defense being picked on by the Northfield offense, it was a very frustrating game for Manchester head coach Greg Miller.

“We come out in the third quarter and we’ve got to figure out how to make better halftime adjustments,” said Miller, whose team gave up 36 points in the third quarter.

“We as coaches need to do a better job of putting our kids in better positions. It’s been a couple of weeks now that teams have gotten up on us after the half. We’re going to talk about what we need to do to get our kids prepared for the third quarter.”

As a unit, the Norse rushed 40 times for 437 yards and eight scores. The Norse saw five different halfbacks reach paydirt, and they also recorded a defensive touchdown in the rout.

Manchester senior quarterback Hayes Sturtsman completed 8 of his 14 passes for 161 yards and was also the leading rusher with 61 yards. In the third quarter, Sturtsman found an opening and carved the Norse defense en route to a 26-yard touchdown run.

However, along the way, Sturtsman received a double-penalty for taunting the defense – resulting in an ejection. It proved costly for Manchester the rest of the night, and it may cost the Squires more as Sturtsman will miss next week’s game.

Sophomore quarterback Devin Marcum stepped in during Sturtsman’s absence, and he completed 4 of his 11 pass attempts for 35 yards, including a touchdown pass to Trey Clark late in the fourth quarter. Marcum also had two of his passes intercepted.

The Squires, now 1-4 overall and  0-1 in the TRC’s North Division, will look get back on the winning track next week when they travel to Tippecanoe Valley.

Northfield improved to 4-1 and 2-0, and will host Rochester in Week 6.
