Wawasee Beats Memorial, Earns First Conference Win

ELKHART – Wawasee swept all three singles matches and won at No. 1 doubles, earning a 4-1 Northern Lakes Conference boys tennis win at Elkhart Memorial Thursday evening.

It was the first win in conference play for the Warriors this season.

Dylan Staley breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brandon Bailey at No. 1 singles, while Zach Leedy beat Bradley Melendez 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Graham Perek won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles  over Richie Hooven.

Brady Robinson and Jacob Krugman won a second-set tiebreaker en route to their 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) No. 1 doubles win over Memorial’s Chris Troyer and Mike Troyer.

The Warriors dropped all three junior varsity matches.

Now 4-9 overall and 1-5 in the conference, Wawasee will host NorthWood Monday in the Warriors’ final NLC match of the season.



Squires Sweep Whitko In Non-Conference Match

SOUTH WHITLEY – Manchester swept Whitko 5-0 in a boys tennis match Thursday between two Three Rivers Conference schools that didn’t count in the TRC standings.

Spence Trick at No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Luke Donathan and Parker Wagoner each won 6-0, 6-0 in their matches. Two other matches, Logan Parrett at No. 2 singles and Uria Hein and Drake Hatfield at No. 2 doubles, went 6-1, 6-0 in favor of the Squires.

Grant Strobel won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

“This annually scheduled second contest versus Whitko always provides an opportunity to see some guys at some different spots. We moved some singles guys to doubles and some doubles guys to singles. I was very pleased with the way our team handled the change,” said Manchester coach Eric Screeton.

Kyle shepherd, Quinn Martin and Kam Lester each won junior varsity singles matches for Manchester by identical 8-0 scores.

Manchester (4-4) travels to Columbia City for a non-conference match Monday. Whitko (1-7) hosts West Noble Monday in non-conference play.



Triton Blanks Bluejays In HNAC Competition

BOURBON – Triton improved its Hoosier North Athletic Conference boys tennis record to 5-1 with a 5-0 victory over North Judson Thursday.

Carter Kuntz of Triton downed Briker Stayrook 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. John Gardner won a third-set super tiebreaker 6-1, 6-7, 10-8 over Hayden Kaminski at No. 2 singles, and Trevor Miller won 6-2, 6-3 over Blake Shell.

At No. 1 doubles, Keygan Mosier and Chase Butler won in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 over Gavin Alonso and Caleb Shireman. Tyler Heckaman and Jared Bules beat Kyle Burkett and Zach Hughes 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Now 9-7 overall, Triton will play in the Merrillville Invitational Saturday.

Lakeland Christian Claims Victory Over Lakewood Christian

WINONA LAKE – Parker Stewart scored three goals, with Josh Turner and Garrett McCoomb adding a goal each for Lakeland Christian in its 5-1 boys soccer victory over visiting Lakewood Christian Thursday.

McCoomb had three assists, with Stewart and McQuade credited with an assist each.

The Cougars had eight shots on goal, and Remington Swanson had seven saves in goal for LCA.

Lakeland Christian improved to 4-7 and will host Granger Christian on Saturday.



Lady Warriors Win

ELKHART – Sara Pritchard scored a goal in each half, and Jenny Camarena added an insurance goal in the 75th minute to propel Wawasee to a 3-1 non-conference girls soccer win at Elkhart Christian Thursday.

Olivia Birch assisted on Pritchard’s first goal 30 minutes in to the match. Meghan Beer assisted Pritchard at the 70-minute mark. Camarena’s goal was unassisted.

Wawasee (3-8) travels to Middlebury to take on Northridge in a Northern Lakes Conference tilt Tuesday.



Tigers Beat Valley

PERU – Tippecanoe Valley had 20 shots on goal, and 23 shots total, in its 2-0 Three Rivers Conference boys soccer loss at Peru Thursday.

Peru scored goals in the seventh minute and again in the 63rd minute.

Valley (1-9, 0-5 TRC) hosts Lakeland Christian on Thursday.



Lady Pilgrims Defeat Warsaw VB In 4 Sets

Alexie Day had 20 kills and 16 digs for Warsaw in its 22-25, 25-16, 28-26, 25-15 Northern Lakes Conference volleyball loss to visiting Plymouth in the Tiger Den Thursday.

Hannah Leach added eight kills for the Lady Tigers. Kacy Bragg and Erin Peugh had 15 and 14 digs, respectively. Betty Barnett had four blocks, and Kennedy Lauck had three blocks for Warsaw.

Plymouth won the junior varsity match 25-20, 25-16 over Warsaw. Gwyn Bellamy had six kills, Kylie Prater had 11 digs and Katie Schmidt had 2 aces for the Lady Tigers.

The Warsaw freshman team won a pair of matches Thursday, 25-13, 25-9 over Plymouth and 25-13, 25-20 over Culver Academies.

Tessa Wood had 18 kills and 14 aces in the two matches for Warsaw. Rylee Kaufman had 27 digs in the two wins.

Warsaw’s varsity will play in the Michigan City Invitational Saturday.



Whitko VB Falls In 4

SOUTH WHITLEY – Hannah Sikora had 32 assists and Kristina Slater added 32 digs and two aces for Whitko in its 16-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 loss to visiting Southwood in Three Rivers Conference volleyball Thursday.

Mahkinsey Myers and Haley Howard had two aces each. Carissa Beck had four blocks and 10 kills, and Howard added nine kills for the Lady Wildcats.

Whitko will play in the Wawasee Invitational  tournament Saturday.



Lady Bruins Beat Triton Volleyball

WATERFORD MILLS – Nicole Sechrist had 10 kills, 13 digs and three blocks for Triton in its 25-18, 25-22, 25-9 non-conference volleyball loss at Bethany Christian Thursday.

Hannah Wanemacher had 16 assists and nine digs for Triton. Abbey Viers had four kills for the Lady Trojans.

Triton will host Winamac in Hoosier North Athletic Conference play Tuesday.

SYRACUSE – Tiffany Koble had 11 digs and Elizabeth Kleopfer had four kills for Wawasee in its 25-8, 25-9, 25-20 Northern Lakes Conference volleyball loss to visiting Concord Thursday.

In the junior varsity match, Molly Jones had six kills and three aces, and Madi Mottern had five kills in the Lady Warriors’ 25-18, 23-25, 15-11 win over Concord. Ashley Vazquez and Ava Rush had three and two aces, respectively. Ella Williamson had 13 digs, and Ava Rush had eight digs for Wawasee.

The freshman team won 25-6, 25-8, 25-10. Catherine Ondrla had eight assists, five digs and four aces, Morgan Heche had 10 digs and six aces, with Emma Dippon getting six kills, three aces and a block for Wawasee.

Wawasee (1-13 overall, 0-3 NLC) hosts its invitational Saturday.



Lady ‘Cats Golf Wraps Regular Season

COLUMBIA CITY – Bailey Wright shot a 53 for Whitko in its 194-247 girls golf loss to Columbia City in the regular season finale Thursday.

Kayce Sims had a 62, and Makayla Compton and Erin Starkweather both shot 66.

Whitko will play in the Warsaw sectional Saturday.
