SOUTH WHITLEY – The Manchester Lady Squires wasted no time scoring Wednesday evening. They then made sure the Whitko Lady Wildcats didn’t score.

In a Three Rivers Conference girls soccer game played in misty conditions, junior Carsyn Howard scored in the third minute of the 80-minute contest, senior goalkeeper Kiera Stacy stopped a Whitko penalty kick in the ninth minute, and the Lady Squires played stingy defense throughout.

It all led to a 4-0 win over Whitko, as Manchester improved to 7-4-1 overall and 2-1 in the TRC standings.

The Lady Wildcats fell to 1-11 and 1-3.

“Our girls started the game well,” said Manchester coach Jen Birch. “They made some passes and connected well, and anytime you can get a quick goal it boosts  your confidence for the rest of the game. That really helped the girls.”

Sophomore Gabbie Brewer pushed Manchester’s lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute, Howard scored again in the 63rd minute on an assist from freshman Emma Garriott, and junior Julie Dalsagar rounded out the scoring in the 73rd minute.

“Carsyn (Howard) has a fantastic leg,” said Birch. “She’s been a great player for us the last couple years. She’s the captain on the team. She places the ball very well, whether she’s scoring herself or leading her teammates to a goal. She knows the game and how to play it, and she’s done great.

“The other goals were great confidence boosters. Julie crashed after a shot and got a goal. Gabby got one, and she’s got a great foot. She plays all positions for me, whatever I ask of her.”

Stacy made four saves in the win, including the PK early in the game.

Birch also credited the strong defensive play of junior Jirni Cripe, sophomore Haley Clifford and freshman Kayla Metzger.

“They’ve been playing well,” Birch said of her defenders. “Our defense is very young. We graduated all of our defense last year, and these girls came in and listened and stepped up to the task.

“Haley Clifford is our sweeper this year, and she’s just done a great job listening, seeing the ball and clearing it out when need be. They really cover for each other, overlap, and make sure nothing gets in there.”

Whitko senior goalkeeper Stephanie Baughman made 13 saves.

The Lady Wildcats are in action again Saturday in a TRC game at North Miami.

Manchester hosts conference foe Rochester Monday.
