The Trojans’ Jared Bules held off Valley’s Eric Wright 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the Triton win.
Valley took a 2-1 lead when its No. 1 doubles team of Peyton Mills and Dakota Parker took a 6-2, 6-2 win over Keygan Mosier and Tyler Heckaman.
“Our No. 1 doubles team played really well today. They were aggressive,” Valley head coach Nick Kindig said. “Other than their first game, I was really proud of how they played. We’ve found a good combination there and they’ve played well together.”
The other Valley win came at No. 3 singles, where Garrett Feldman needed the minimum 12 games to beat Gavin Greer.
Triton’s first win came at No. 2 doubles, when Trevor Miller and John Gardner won 6-1, 6-0 over Jeremy Landis and Connor Frentzel.
Carter Kuntz rolled to a first-set win at No. 1 singles over Valley’s Seth Huffman, but the Viking made things interesting by taking a 4-1 lead in the second set. Kuntz was able to right himself and came back to win the set 7-5.
“(Kuntz is) a streaky player, and he’s one of those guys who hates losing,” Triton coach Allen Peckham said. “When he got down in the second set he got mad at himself, but he stepped up and started to go.
“Carter’s a scrappy guy who’s not going to lose very often. You’ve really got to play well to get by him.”
Kindig was pleased with the way Huffman hung in there after the slow start.
“Seth struggled in the first set, and was up early in the second set,” he said. “Sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way. But atter struggling in the first set he turned it around, and I was really proud of that.“
Bules then secured the Trojan win shortly after the conclusion of the No. 1 singles match.
“He had an opportunity to hold his serve early in the second set and finish his match earlier,” Peckham said. “But he double faulted, then a mishit and the next thing you know it’s back to deuce. But he recovered well, broke serve the next game and was able to put it away from there.”
If the lineup looked different to Triton fans, it’s because Peckham had to do some shuffling beforehand.
“Chase Butler, one of our No. 1 doubles players, was sick today. So we had to shuffle the lineup a little bit,” the Triton coach said. “I moved one of my No. 2 doubles to No. 1, then my other No. 2 doubles player played at No. 2 singles. Then I put my No. 2 and No. 3 singles players at No. 2 doubles, and I brought a kid up from JV to play at No. 3 singles.”
After a very slow start to the season, Kindig said Valley has made strides toward being a more competitive team, making improvements along the way.
“We’ve definitely come a long way; I don’t know if the guys notice it right now, but the parents and fans have,” Kindig said. “I want to make sure we’re better at the end of the year than we were at the beginning. We’ve got a long way to go, but I’m happy with how we’ve improved.”
Triton improved to 7-5 and has the rest of the week off. The Trojans host Bremen on Monday. Tippecanoe Valley is now 3-8 and will host Cass in a non-conference match Thursday.
