Triton Too Much For Undermanned Caston

September 2, 2017 at 6:03 a.m.

BOURBON – One would think things went well for Triton in its 50-13 home win over Caston Friday night. Trojan football coach Ron Brown, however, was having none of it after the victory.

In the first half it was either feast or famine for the Triton offense; either the Trojans scored or they failed to get a first down. Caston was most effective running the ball through the left side of the Triton defense.

Triton took an early 7-0 lead when James “Bo” Snyder found  Delano Shumpert for a nine-yard touchdown. But on Caston’s second possession, senior running back Kasey Ault broke through Triton’s left side for a 40-yard run. That set up Brady Hartman’s game-tying touchdown run.

From there it was all Triton, which answered with a 47-second touchdown drive, and the defense scored with a safety to close out the first quarter.

“They corrected their mistakes. I felt like we had some mental errors early on. We may have had an issue of respecting our opponents and how much work they put in earlier in the week,” Brown said. “(Caston) practiced all week, too. Just like us, and we need to make sure we respect every single opponent we have.

“Because if we don’t, we will lose and we’ll lose a bunch of games in our conference. So I’d like to see that cleaned up a lot.”

Of concern for Trojan fans are some injuries that piled up in the second half. Snyder sat out several plays in the third quarter with an injury, and running back Max Slusser was having his leg stretched out on the bench after an apparent cramp. Neither played much in the fourth quarter.

On the other hand, Caston only has 18 players on its roster, so the Comet starters scored late in the game on the Triton reserves.

“We had quite a few kids get nicked up with some injuries, so I’m glad we had some (junior varsity) kids we could go ahead and put in, and not have to leave those guys in,” Brown said.

“Caston’s in a rough spot right now. They probably would have loved to sub in their JV guys against our JV guys, but they just didn’t have the people to sub. That’s tough.”

Snyder completed 17 of 29 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns on the night. Shumpert caught nine passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Drew Stichter had five receptions for 65 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Hunter McIntyre scooted 59 yards for a late touchdown in mop-up time. Brown said he wasn’t concerning himself with offensive prowess so much as the defense.

Ault finished with 118 yards on 15 carries, with two carries of 20 or more yards.

“I was just paying attention to defense. We had too many breakdowns on defense and I was trying to correct those,” Brown said.

Triton improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2008 season, and the Trojans stand at 2-0 in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference.

Triton will have arguably its toughest test to date Friday when the Trojans host Bremen in a non-conference game.

Caston fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the HNAC.
