Times-Union Launches New Publication

September 2, 2017 at 4:22 a.m.

The Times-Union has launched a new direct mail publication that will appear in mailboxes throughout the Kosciusko County on Wednesday.

It’s called the Best of Times.

Inside you’ll find content and advertising relevant to Kosciusko County. It’s all local.

It’s a great way to stay informed, be entertained and find value – all within a stone’s throw from your home.

Since 1854, the Times-Union has been family owned and devoted to the dissemination of public information via print in Kosciusko County.

The Best of Times is the latest evolution in this 163-year mission.

Best of Times is free of charge and delivered by the United States Postal Service to every residential address in Kosciusko County.

We are launching this publication as a monthly offering, with the intention of it growing to bi-monthly and eventually weekly status.

To be sure, print has not been without its challenges in the digital era, but we believe print remains the best way to reach an audience for advertisers.

Studies show people are in a different state of mind when they are reading a print product as opposed to digital. They are more engaged and more likely to retain what they read.

People measure digital success with click-throughs and conversion rates. Digital has its place, but you can’t maintain marketing of your brand by digital alone. Print lets you establish your brand identity and communicate it effectively to your market.

Independent research published by the Newspaper Association of America shows that 77 percent of readers acted on a newspaper ad in the last month.

For readers, print offers reliability, accuracy and credibility. Readers feel they can trust what they read in print.

A recent U.S. survey showed newspapers and magazines have a 63 percent popularity among consumers while the Internet has just 25 percent. The same study showed 67 percent of those surveyed preferred printed materials over digital.

Certainly, there is a place for news in the digital world. The Times-Union was one of the first newspapers in northern Indiana to post stories online back in 1996 and we’ve had a digital presence ever since.

In 2011 we put our website behind a paywall. As of Tuesday, we are removing that barrier to our local content as a service to readers across Kosciusko County.

Our e-Edition – every page every day online as a searchable, downloadable PDF – will remain subscription only.

We will continue to provide content on digital platforms, but we still believe in – and are committed to – the value of print for news consumers and advertisers alike.
