Triton Wins Rematch With Winamac

BOURBON – Time and again Triton has had to overcome, and the host Trojans proved themselves to be resilient once more Friday night, besting Winamac 48-29 in a Class 1A Sectional 41 football semifinal.

In this instance, Triton needed to overcome its own mistakes before taking control of the rematch between the two Hoosier North Athletic Conference schools.

On the second play of the game, the Warriors’ Gabe Townsend pounced on an incompleted lateral, and returned it 36 yards for an 8-0 Winamac lead just 19 seconds into the contest.

Triton promptly answered with a 10-play, 68-yard drive capped by a Max Slusser touchdown run.

On Winamac’s first offensive play, Ethan Rogers, the Warriors’ standout running back, fumbled. Triton recovered and three plays later James “Bo” Snyder found Delano Shumpert wide open down the right side for a 35-yard touchdown and the lead.

Winamac answered when Harley Pugh returned the kickoff 95 yards for a score and a 15-13 Warrior lead, having lost a fumble on its only offensive play.

Triton’s offense worked efficiently all night, and it quickly regained the lead when Ethan Berry capped a seven-play drive with an 18-yard scoring run to give the Trojans the lead for good.

Shumpert and Snyder hooked up for a 63-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Rogers brought his team back to within one touchdown with a 53-yard run on fourth down to start the third quarter, but Triton got a third Snyder to Shumpert touchdown and Snyder hit Drew Stichter for another score to put the game away.

Triton’s offense never punted. The Trojans either scored, turned the ball over on downs (once), lost a fumble (three times), or ran out the clock at the end of the game.

“This win is great for our program, our  community and our school,” Triton coach Ron Brown said. “It’s always hard to play a team twice in one season, and I thought our boys responded well to all the adversity we had early in the game, and we finished off the game well.”

Rogers, who rushed for more than 1,100 yards in seven games before Friday night, finished with 241 yards on 21 carries and a pair of touchdowns. He didn’t get much help from his friends, however. The rest of the Warriors accounted for 63 yards of offense, and Winamac turned the ball over eight times, split evenly between fumbles and interceptions.

“We did a few things in practice to get ready for him,” Brown said. “We worked on creating turnovers with some strip drills, and how we were going to hit Rogers and bring him down,” Brown said. “We watched a lot of film and the kids put in quite a few hours of study on it. I can check online to see how many hours of film they’ve watched, and the average kid had two hours in.”

“They wanted to get this done. We told them in pregame ‘the team that’s going to win is the team that won’t care that it’s cold tonight.’ Our boys didn’t care about the cold.”

Slusser finished with 106 yards rushing, and Shumpert had five catches for 14 yards to go with his three scores. Snyder passed for 194 yards and four touchdowns.

Brown said his team is focused on winning in memory of Cam Scarberry, who died in a car accident on Sept. 17. He’s never far from the Trojans thoughts.

“It’s probably unfair that we have 12 players on the field all the time and they only have 11,” said Brown. “I think that’s had a lot to do with some of the things we’ve been able to do.”

Triton will play at LaVille (7-4) Friday night for the sectional title. The Trojans won the first matchup in HNAC play, 22-14 on Aug. 25 in a contest moved from Lakeville to Bourbon due to construction on the LaVille campus. The Lancers have a four-game winning streak, having defeated North Judson and Culver Community twice each.

“We always get up for the game when we play that team up north,” Brown said. “We’re excited to go up there. Coach (Will) Hostrawser does a great job, and it’ll be a tough, exciting football game.”

The Trojans (8-3) will be attempting to win its first sectional title since 2008. LaVille hasn’t won a sectional since 2003.
