First Friday Theme Is ‘Thanks For Giving’

October 25, 2017 at 6:05 p.m.

November’s First Friday theme is “Thanks for Giving,” and G & G Hauling and Excavating has some events planned to help local service groups and to thank the community for its 51 years in business.

G & G will have several pieces of equipment on display, including a big excavator, an off-road haul truck, a dump truck, skid loaders, mini excavators and an old bulldozer from when the excavating business began in Warsaw, according to Mike Loher, of G & G.

At 6:30 and 8 p.m. Nov. 3, G & G will have an excavator demonstration with its big pieces of equipment along Buffalo Street near the county courthouse.

There will be an equipment rodeo from 5 to 9 p.m. Participants must be at least 18 years old to participate. At 7 p.m.,  local celebrities from the city council, radio station, fire and police departments will participate in the equipment rodeo.

A scavenger hunt will be a “really cool” event, Loher said.

“You’ll be able to find your papers at any one of the pieces of equipment or at any of the not-for-profit organizations that are downtown. And you’re going to have to answer questions that are on these papers. You’ll have to go to each place, each booth, each piece of equipment to get your answer. You take it to the G & G table that’s going to be by the cannon on the courthouse lawn, and turn in your sheet, and you’re going to get a little prize,” Loher said.

Participants’ names will then be entered into a drawing. Every hour, a name will be drawn out of the completed scavenger hunt forms. For every winner, G & G Hauling & Excavating will make a financial contribution to the charity of their choice in the winner’s name to go along with the First Friday theme of “Thanks for Giving.”

MacAllister Rentals is providing the equipment for the rodeo, and it’s also bringing an excavator simulator that anyone can take a turn on and “basically run an excavator,” Loher said.

Kids will find plenty to do, too. Loher said they have a bunch of rocks prepped for kids to paint and design however they want.

“We’re going to have a couple of sandboxes, and there also will be a coin hunt. There will be coins hidden in the sand so the kids will be able to enjoy that,” he said.

To take part in the First Friday activities, according to Loher, “We’re asking that you bring one of these items. We’d like a donation of one of these items to fill the truck. Our goal is to fill this truck with these items, and then these items will be distributed among 10 local organizations.”

The donation items needed include deodorant, toothpaste, dental floss, toilet tissue, shampoo, soap/body wash, cleaning supplies, paper towels, dish soap, laundry detergent, hand sanitizer, diapers, baby wipes, sheets, blankets, towels, wash clothes, coats, gloves, hats, scarves, all types of canned goods, all types of dry food, children’s books and toys, coloring books and crayons.

Buffalo and Center streets in downtown Warsaw will be closed beginning at 3 p.m. Nov. 3 so equipment can be moved in for the event, Loher said.

“It’s fall, it’s going to be chilly. There’s going to be some fire pits out there. There’s going to be lots of food (vendors). Selfie-stations with the big equipment, so this is a chance for kids and big kids to see some of this really big, cool equipment up close and personal,” he said.

First Friday coordinator Paula Bowman said Russ Weed will perform as Frank Sinatra from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the city hall plaza balcony.

“We’ll have our usual merchants and vendors in addition to all the G & G big boy toys,” she said. ‘It’s going to be a really exciting night.”

Loher also challenged other companies to do a drive for the donated items and join forces with G & G to fill that big truck.

“Let’s fill that up to help the less fortunate this fall and winter,” he said.

Bowman also noted that the Downtown Spooktacular is Friday from 6 to 7 p.m., with registration beginning at 5:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. costume contest. There will be 35 stops for children during the Spooktacular to get candy and/or other treats. Kohl’s, Miller’s Merry Manor and the Optimist Club is helping with the Spooktacular, she said.
