Rob and Pam Newman, of Newman Construction, donated $500 to the Mentone Elementary special education class to help fund a trip to Magical Meadows for 15 students. Cathy Olson, special education teacher, said this is the second year that the Newman family has donated so that students have an opportunity to ride horses. Magical Meadows specializes in therapeutic horseback riding.
Olson said students in the FFA Club help during the trip so that every student can enjoy riding.
They also donated $500 to the Tippecanoe Valley High School Building Trades class. The donation is earmarked for the purchase of construction equipment.

Superintendent Brett Boggs said, “People who donate to causes such as these care deeply about our school corporation and the lives of children we serve.”
A $15,000 grant from the Kosciusko County Community Foundation will mean new playground equipment at the Burket Educational Center and Mentone Elementary. According to Boggs, the grant funds will be combined with funds set aside in the Capital Projects Fund, Lutheran/KCH partnership funds and other grant funding. Boggs indicated that there will be a major replacement of equipment at Mentone and additional equipment at Burket.
A walking/bike path will be constructed on the Mentone Elementary School grounds for both students and the community to use. Funding comes from the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, REMC Operation Roundup. The $3,500 grant will be combined with Capital Projects Fund and Lutheran/KCH grants and other funds. The K21 Health Foundation awarded the school corporation $84,230 for the project as well. The path will be a half mile long and 10 feet wide.
A $10,000 Impact Grant from the Fulton County Community Foundation will cover 50 percent of a matching grant to upgrade the libraries at the middle and high schools. The Dekko Foundation recently awarded a $20,000 matching grant for the project.
Middle School Assistant Principal Cory Cooper explained the benefits of a student tracker for high school programs. A portion of a Lilly Planning Grant was used to cover the annual subscription of $425 for the service. Cooper said they will use the tracking information to help measure the success of TVHS in preparing graduates for post high school education. The data compiled will be for both two- and four-year programs, public and private institutions, and graduation rates.
The board adopted the 2018 general budget, $15,513,355; capital projects fund, $2,531,724; school bus replacement fund 2018-2020, $23,078,984; debt service, $2,819,325; and transportation, $1,920,580. The next step will be to get budget approval from the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.
