Warsaw boys soccer coach Frank Courtois challenged his players ... and they accepted, scoring three goals in the final 13 minutes en route to a 3-1 win over the Fort Wayne South Side Archers.

In a Class 3A sectional opener Monday evening, the host Tigers and Archers were scoreless at halftime, despite the fact Warsaw dominated everywhere but the scoreboard.

South Side took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute of the 80-minute match on a goal by senior Greg Adams, and the Tigers kicked it into high gear from there.

Sophomore Jorge Rico scored off an assist from senior Eric Ocock, tying the game in the 67th minute.

Two minutes later, junior Payne Rager’s free kick into the box was headed into the net by sophomore Tedros Berelsman.

The Tigers capped off their scoring flurry in the 77th minute when sophomore Anthony Brown assisted classmate Blake Burns.

Though his team dominated play in the first half, Courtois was disappointed with his team’s slow start. He was certainly pleased, however, with the way his squad finished the match.

“We started the game very slow today,” said Courtois, whose team improved to 11-5-2, while South Side’s season ended with a 10-6-1 record.

“I don’t know what’s going on, if the guys are tired or what. The defense was playing well ... the midfield was kind of sluggish. In the second half we kind of put it to him, we said ‘come on guys, you need to wake up.’

“We got down one goal and they kept pressing. I made some changes. We ended up playing a 4-4-2 to give us some more manpower up top.”

Courtois said he reminded his players a loss in the tournament means the season is over.

“I told them ‘we can go home, or we can keep playing,’” said Courtois. “And they did step up.”

With the win, Warsaw advanced to Wednesday’s 5 p.m. semifinal match against Huntington North.

Huntington North and Fort Wayne Wayne played to a 1-1 draw Monday through 80 minutes of regulation and two 7-minute overtime periods.

Huntington North advanced with a 5-3 victory in a penalty kick round.

Fort Wayne North and Homestead will play in a semifinal game at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The sectional championship is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday, with the winner advancing to the Kokomo Regional.

“That’s what we’re all looking for,” Courtois said of advancing. “This is what we’ve been working for all season. We’ve been working for the postseason, and hopefully we can get another win on Wednesday.”
