Warsaw, Wawasee Split Swim Meet

November 27, 2017 at 5:56 p.m.

There was plenty of excitement to be had in the first Northern Lakes Conference swim meet of the season for Wawasee and Warsaw Saturday morning.

When it was over, the Lady Tigers won 107-71, while the Wawasee boys took the last race of the day to earn a 96-87 win over the hosts.

Many of the events featured tight races for every team point. In the second girls race, the 200 freestyle, Wawasee’s Ella Park edged Warsaw’s Laurel Moeller by .07 seconds. The Lady Tigers’ Morgan Bruner finished third by .21 seconds over Wawasee’s Caitlin Kingery.

In the boys 100 butterfly, Jared Krugman of Wawasee finished .62 seconds ahead of  Tiger Evan Borchers. Warsaw’s Ian Deming edged Wawasee’s Spencer Naugler for third by less than a second.

The final boys race, the 400 freestyle relay, was won by Wawasee handily, but the Warriors needed the win in the race to claim victory over the Tigers in the meet.

“Warsaw is always a great meet because of the level of athletes they have on their team,” Wawasee coach Julie Robinson said.  “We know going in that we need to race. The boys have not had a win over Warsaw in quite a while, and they knew that they had a shot this year so there was a lot of excitement leading up to Saturday.

“I don't think there is ever any drawback from that level of competition. It is a great preview for the kids to see where they are today and what they need to do to get to their goals at the end of the year.”

Warsaw coach Tony DeBrota was impressed with Wawasee’s strong finishes.

“Wawasee’s a great team when it comes to finishes. They have awesome kicks on that last 25 of the home stretch,” he said.

“All week I was telling’ em, ‘we gotta work on our kicking, we gotta work on our kicking.’ I think we did a good job, but toward the end we really started to see the tiredness from kicking as much as we did the whole meet. I think it’s great practice for the meets we have coming up. We’re going to have to keep pushing that, even now with the improvement, we still have a ways to go when it comes to finishing fast and finishing efficiently.”

Krugman also won the 200 free, and Brady Robinson was a double winner for the Warriors.

“Brady Robinson was our stand out performer. He went a 1:56.72 in the 200 IM which is just off the state standard,” coach Robinson said. “He also won the 100 back after anchoring our 200 free relay with a 21.74 and anchored our 400 free relay for the win.

“Jared switched races to try to score more points for the team in the 100 fly and came from behind to win with a lifetime-best swim.”

Dane Jenkins won the diving for Wawasee. Park also won the 500 freestyle, and Rileigh Atwood took the 200 IM for the Lady Warriors.

Winners for Warsaw’s boys team included Alex Cook in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Nick Zogbi in the 500 free and Grant Knight in the 100 breaststroke. The Tigers won the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays as well.

Winners for the Lady Tigers were Olivia Herman in the 50 free, Emma Pena in diving, Taylor Gunter in the 100 butterfly, Delaney Wihebrink in the 100 free and 100 breaststroke, and Lauren Kuhl in the 100 backstroke. Warsaw won two of the three relay races as well.

Next up for Warsaw is a conference meet Thursday at NorthWood. Wawasee visits Elkhart Memorial for an NLC meet Tuesday.
