In a 44-38 win at Columbia City Saturday night, the Tigers trailed the Eagles 11-3 after one quarter of play, but took over from there.
Warsaw outscored the hosts 16-5 in the second stanza and 41-27 over the final three quarters, improving to 2-0 this season while Columbia City fell to 0-2.
“We got off to a bad start,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose team beat Columbia City for the fifth straight year and for the 11th time in the last 12 meetings.
“To be down 11-3 at the end of the first quarter, and then outscore them 16-5 in the second quarter, I was happy with that. Our second quarter was much better.”
A three-pointer by senior Jack Grose with 1:15 remaining in the first half gave Warsaw its first lead of the game at 16-14.
The Eagles forged ahead 25-23 with a three-pointer from sophomore Mitchell Wilson, and then held their last lead of the game at 27-25.
Following Wilson’s trey, Warsaw went on a 13-0 run, bridging the third and fourth quarters, to build a nine-point lead when junior Landen Ferber swished a three-pointer with 5:52 to play.
The Eagles got within two points on three occasions the rest of the way, but the Tigers made 6 of 7 free throws in the final frame and secured the win.
“Tyler Metzinger had a good stretch in there ... Nolan Groninger got a rebound and got the ball to Landen Ferber for a three-pointer,” Ogle said of his team’s 13-0 run.
“Once again, things weren’t looking good, but we kept playing. We took some charges. Our defense was pretty good, other than what Mitchell Wilson did ... 26 points from a sophomore is a strong performance. But other than him, they didn’t have much.”
Wilson finished the game 6 of 15 from the field overall, 3 of 10 from the arc, and 11 of 11 at the charity stripe en route to his game-high 26 points.
Wilson scored 13 of his team’s 16 points in the first half, and all 11 of Columbia City’s points in the fourth quarter.
Ethan Christen scored five points for the Eagles, while Trent Simmons finished with three points and Garrett Roehling and Michael Sievers two each.
Nolan Groninger once again led the way for Warsaw. The 6-foot junior, who tallied 17 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists in Wednesday’s season-opening win at Tippecanoe Valley, finished with 14 points, four assists and three steals Saturday.
Grose, Metzinger and Jaylen Reese scored six points each in the win, while Ferber finished with five, Trevor Rumple three, and Jack Rhoades and Zach Riley two each.
“We had seven different guys score, and we were 12 of 16 on free throws,” said Ogle. “The game got a little sped up at times, and got a little crazy, but I was proud of the way we finished.”
Warsaw will play its home opener Friday against Homestead, and then host Huntington North Saturday.
The Tigers won the JV game 48-28. Blake Marsh led Warsaw with 13 points, while Connor Lennox scored 12 points.
