Frances Slocum Chapter, DAR

The monthly meeting of the Frances Slocum Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution took place Nov. 14 at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Activity Room, Wabash.

Devotions were "Everyone Can Serve,” Psalm 25-10.

The November president general's message was shared by Linda Thompson. The restoration of the Constitution Hall stage has been completed. The new DAR Museum Gallery renovation is underway and DAR Museum staff are planning an exhibition that will feature objects from many DAR collections.  

Kie Ann Kirk gave the national defender report on “A Full Circle Moment.” In June at the Southeast Michigan DAR Chapter Picnic, the Rosie the Riveters Chapter from Willow Run Bomber Plant, Ypsilanti, Mich., were special guests, sharing their experiences making the World War II B-24 bombers, “The Liberators.” Lee Anne Briese told how her dad was a B-24 bomber pilot in Europe. They were shot down behind enemy lines, becoming prisoners of war. He was attributed with saving the lives of his crew members with a safe landing. He always said, “It wasn’t him; it was the very well-built plane.”

 The Indian committee minute report was given on the tradition of the Wishbone by Avonne Lee Knecht. The tradition of breaking the wishbone was brought to the new world by the Pilgrims.

The chapter continues to send coupons to active military bases. On Nov. 2, over 4 pounds of coupons were sent to a Navy base in Rota, Spain.

Karen Stouffer present a travelogue of local Indian sites in Wabash, Miami and Grant counties.  

The next meeting of the Frances Slocum Chapter will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Grandstaff Hentgen Activity Room, 1231 Manchester Ave., Wabash. Sam Daugherty, MSgt. USAF (ret.), Wabash County Veterans Service Officer, will give the program on “Veteran’s Services.”

Prospective members and guests are welcome to attend.

Tuesday Night Bridge Group

On Nov. 21 the group had four tables, with the following winners: Tom Anderson, Rosalee Spear, Nannette Newland, Joan Earhart and Jan Chiddister.

Janet and John Wagley are hostess and host for November.



American Association of University Women

The Warsaw Branch of AAUW met at the Kosciusko County Community Foundation office on Nov. 18.  

The meeting was brought to order by Pam Chastain, who thanked the hostesses and all members who brought items for the silent auction. The president’s report included a discussion of the recent events in the news regarding sexual harassment of women. Chastain emphasized that the reports present an opportunity for increased empowerment for women and women’s rights.

The membership passed a proposal for a new fundraiser for the scholarship program. There was also discussion about recruitment of young women who might not know the mission of AAUW.

After the business meeting and a continental breakfast, members purchased items in the silent auction. The money raised at the meeting will be used for scholarships for women returning to higher education.

The next meeting will be March 17.

Four Seasons Ladies Bridge

The Four Seasons Ladies Bridge met Nov. 22 at Grace Village.

Winners were Joan Earhart, Beth Huffer and Maxine Harris. Huffer was the hostess.



Singles Meeting Friends

A small group gathered the night before Thanksgiving to visit and play cards

Members were reminded of the Christmas party Dec. 2 at Tippe Downs.

The group meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Martin’s Super Market, Warsaw.
