Mangas Leads Wildcats To Win Over Lancers

WINONA LAKE – He wore the visiting team’s uniform this time, but hometown hoops star Kyle Mangas was his usual self Tuesday night.

Mangas, an Indiana All-Star over the summer after an incredible prep career for the Warsaw Tigers, put together quite a homecoming performance.

The 6-foot-3 Mangas, the epitome of basketball efficiency, scored a game-high 29 points on 12-of-18 shooting as he led the sixth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats to an 87-68 win over the Grace College Lancers.

It’s not often fans cheer for a player from the visiting team, but in the Crossroads League opener at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center they did.

“That was really fun,” said Mangas, who averages 18 points per game for the 7-1 Wildcats. “I was really looking forward to coming back to Warsaw and playing in front of the home fans. That was an awesome game.

“I just tried to come out aggressive from the start. Hunting three-pointers, I’ve been working on that. I just had a fearless mindset and attacked all aspects.”

Mangas scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the first half, leading Indiana Wesleyan to a 52-32 lead at halftime.

Mangas made 5 of 9 three-point shots and did not attempt a free throw.

“Kyle Mangas lived up to his billing,” said 41st-year Grace College coach Jim Kessler, who remembered Mangas attending?Lancer Basketball Camp as a youngster.

“We tried to guard him. They screen for him constantly. He can make the shot, but they screen for him constantly. He’s tough to guard ... he’s a very good offensive player.”

The Wildcats shot 53 percent from the field in their win, including a sizzling 64 percent in the first half as they led by as many as 23 points before the break.

The Lancers, who fell to 5-4 overall, shot 30 percent in the first half and 34 percent for the game.

The most telling stat from Tuesday night’s box score was the assist-to-turnover ratio for both teams, as they couldn’t have been more different.

Indiana Wesleyan dished out 16 assists and committed just eight turnovers in 40 minutes of action.

The Lancers finished with nine assists and 19 turnovers.

The Wildcats outscored Grace 21-5 in points off turnovers.

“I was disappointed in our shooting percentage, but what really killed us was 19 turnovers,” said Kessler. “That’s been our nemesis all year. You just can’t have that many turnovers.”

Grace used a 13-0 run in the second half to trim the deficit to 10 with just under 13 minutes remaining, but got no closer.

“You have to be consistent the whole game on the offensive end,” said Kessler. “We fragmented, rather than pulling together.

“Young teams do that. I had a strange lineup out there. We’re still searching for who’s dependable at this point. We’re still trying to figure that out.

“Every game in this league is like this. You better come ready, because there’s some really good teams in this league.”

To go with Mangas’ 29 points and five rebounds, Jacob Johnson had 14 points and 11 boards for Indiana Wesleyan, while Evan Maxwell and Grant Smith scored 11 points each.

Jaret Sons led Grace with 12 points, all from the arc, while Matt Jennings finished with 11 points.

Haden Deaton chipped in with nine points and five rebounds for Grace, while Logan Godfrey added eight points and nine boards, and Martin Schiele chipped in with eight points.

The Lancers play at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in league action Tuesday, while Indiana Wesleyan hosts Goshen College the same day.
