Lady Tigers Use Game With Penn As Test

November 22, 2017 at 5:11 p.m.

In his pregame radio comments, Warsaw girls basketball coach Lenny Krebs said he wasn’t putting too much “big picture” emphasis into Tuesday’s home game with Penn.

Instead he called it “a good test and an opportunity to see where we’re at right now.“

There was good news and bad for the Lady Tigers in their 51-43 loss.

Warsaw made 55 percent of its shots from the floor, but thanks to the Lady Kingsmen defense the Lady Tigers only get the ball up 22 times.

Warsaw also held Penn to 14 field goals, but the Lady Kingsmen shot 26 free throws, converting 19, including a 10-of-15 effort in the decisive fourth quarter.

“We’re not where we want to be yet, but I think we’re farther along today than we were yesterday, which is what I wanted,” Krebs said. “This is exactly what we wanted. We talked about before the game we wanted to play a good team and get a measurement of where we were.”

The home team positioned itself well in the first half, taking advantage of Penn’s foul trouble to forge a 17-13 halftime lead. Once Penn put its starters back in to start the second half, it racheted up its defensive pressure.

The result was an 11-1 run that put Penn in the lead. Warsaw had two stretches of six minutes where it didn’t score from the floor in the last two quarters, and all seven of its turnovers in the half were within the droughts.

“In the second half, I thought Penn picked up the pressure on us, and that’s what we wanted to see,” Krebs said. “We wanted to see how we were going to respond in a key moment when we’re playing from in front, and a team starts to put the pressure on you.

“We didn’t respond as well as I wanted to for about a four or five-minute stretch, and then we kind of regained our composure and played kind of even from there. But against a good team like Penn you can’t have that stretch where you don’t play well, and they made us pay the price for it with those turnovers in that stretch.”

Another positive takeaway for the Lady Tigers is they forced 10 Penn turnovers and held the Lady Kingsmen to 43 percent shooting.

Brielle Harrison had 14 points and six rebounds, both team-highs, for Warsaw. Maddie Ryman hit a pair of threes on her way to 11 points, and Emma Bohnenkamper finished with nine for the Lady Tigers. Sara Doi led Penn with a game-high 19 points.

So while not completely satisfied with his team’s performance, Krebs did get a much better idea of what his team needs to improve before the tournament time in February.

“When you’re shooting 54 or 55 percent, you’ve got to make sure you’re getting a shot every possession. We just can’t afford those 17 turnovers,” he said.

“What I’m taking from this is, if you go back to Fort Wayne Luers, we didn’t handle the pressure in any situation, and we’re continuing to see the growth of these young ladies as they learn how to play from behind, how to play from in front and all the different situations. You’re seeing them continue to grow.”

In the junior varsity game, Brooklyn Fitzgerald had four points for Warsaw in its 38-14 loss to Penn.

Lindsey Bradley and Sydney Lancaster had seven points each for the Lady Tigers in their 27-17 loss to Penn in the freshman game.

The Lady Tiger varsity (4-2) will have eight days before its next game at Oregon-Davis on Nov. 30.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old.
