Wawasee pressed its way to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter, and the visiting Lady Trojans were never a significant threat the rest of the way in the Lady Warriors’ 46-27 non-conference win at the Hardwood Tepee.
The Lady Warriors held Triton scoreless the first 6:47 of the game, taking an 11-0 lead. In the first half Wawasee held Triton to three baskets in 11 shots and forced 12 Lady Trojan turnovers, allowing Wawasee to hold a 18-6 lead at intermission.
“We were good early,” Wawasee coach Matt Carpenter said. “Our challenge is being able to continue that success without turning the ball over and being able to knock down shots. We’ve struggled a lot from the floor this year, not being able to knock down shots consistently. But when we do, we are pretty tough.”
“That’s what happened early. We got some good shots, we made those shots, we got to the free throw line and made those. We had a little bit of a lull there before getting back on track.”
The lull was in the second quarter when Wawasee managed to hit just two of five shots from the floor and turned the ball over. The Lady Warriors recovered to hit 54 percent of their shots in the second half and finished at 48 percent for the game.
Wawasee had a balanced scoring attack, with Aubrey Kuhn the leading scorer at eight points. She also had a team-high five rebounds. Casey Schroeder had seven points, with seniors Kabrea Rostochak and Hannah-Marie Lamle getting six points each. In all, eight players scored for Wawasee.
Meanwhile, it was much the same story for Triton as the rest of its season, with turnovers the big bugaboo. The Lady Trojans had only four fewer turnovers than points, leaving coach Adam Heckaman in a sarcastic mood after the game.
“You might have to fill me in on whether we had 30 or 40 turnovers,” he said. “We had some even scoring tonight. We had other kids put the ball in the basket. So that’s a step in the right direction.
“But we are going to continue to struggle offensively when we turn it over 20-plus times.”
Whytnie Miller made Triton’s only trey and finished with seven points. Nicole Sechrist had six points and Abigail Powell had seven rebounds for the Lady Trojans, who showed signs of frustration with themselves in the second half. Heckaman echoed that feeling.
“I’m disappointed for them,” he said. “I know they are better than this. I know they can do better than this. For some reason playing these schools, they just are nervous and they aren’t believing in themselves. I had to pull a couple aside tonight, and I said ‘hey, if I didn’t believe in you, you wouldn’t be out there.’
“We are just going to try to get them back in the right frame of mind.”
In the junior varsity game, Triton’s Jaela Faulkner scored a game-high nine points in the Lady Trojans’ 33-27 win over Wawasee. Madison Mottern led the Lady Warrior JV with seven points.
Wawasee improved to 4-2 and won’t play again until Nov. 28 at West Noble. Triton (2-4) plays its third straight Northern Lakes Conference opponent Tuesday, travelling to Nappanee to take on NorthWood.
