In an 83-76 men’s basketball victory over the Grace Bible College Tigers, Godfrey and Bowen combined for 41 points and 19 rebounds.
Their effort in the first round of the Officer Terry Polston Hoops For Hope Classic helped the Lancers outscore the Tigers 54-24 in the paint, as they improved to 5-2 on the season.
Grace Bible College, a school in Grand Rapids, Mich., fell to 4-4.
Godfrey, a junior, was 11 of 16 from the field and posted game-highs of 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Bowen, a senior, made 6 of 9 field goal attempts and tallied 17 points and eight boards.
“If you look at the points in the paint, we outscored them 54-24, that was huge,” said Grace College coach Jim Kessler. “Our big guys played really well inside.
“Logan has been really steady. He works really hard. He gets to the basket, and he’s got confidence, even against big kids. He’s an incredible rebounder ... he had six offensive rebounds and 11 rebounds overall. Both Logan and Erik were huge for us in the paint tonight.”
Freshman standouts Matting Jennings and Haden Deaton scored 15 and 12 points, respectively, for the Lancers.
The Tigers led 37-34 at halftime and carried an advantage through the first 7:20 of the second half.
Bowen tied the game at 48 with a pair of free throws with 12:40 remaining, and then redshirt freshman Martin Schiele’s trey gave the Lancers their first lead of the half, 51-50, with 12:05 to play.
After the Lancers built a 10-point lead, the Tigers got within three, 70-67, when Marcus Chandler hit a three-pointer with 3:54 remaining.
The Lancers were 0 of 1 at the free throw line in the first half, but made 14 in the second half, the majority of them in the final minute.
“I never felt like we could get the lead and get control until fairly late,” said Kessler. “We could get a lead and they’d get it back. Once we had that little run, that’s when we finally got control of the game.
“A lot of games aren’t decided until late. For us tonight it wasn’t until there was about six minutes to go.
“The halftime score is probably the least-important stat there is, and for us that was really true. I think we came back out and played within ourselves in the second half, and I was pleased with the way we were able to grind it out.”
Hunter Greer led the Tigers with 16 points, while Brandon Winchester-Jones scored 12. Grant Garrison tallied nine points in the loss, while Caleb Anderson and Ethan Kafila finished with eight points each.
The Lancers will Clarke University today at 4 p.m.
Grace Bible College will play Huntington University at noon.
