The ministry, in its first year in Warsaw, is open to children ages 3 to 17. Children can select a Christmas gift for a parent, grandparent, teacher, military personnel or other special person in their life for $5 per gift.
“Our kids are naturally loving and giving, but we don’t let them do that,” said organizer Yvonne Southall. “So this is an opportunity to let them give back.”
While volunteers wrap each gift, the children will make a Christmas card for the person they’re giving the gift to. A photograph of the children will be taken, then volunteers will pray over the family group.
The event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 2 at Warsaw Church of God. Members of the Winona Lake Fire Department will be present, and children and adults may put on firefighter uniforms and have their pictures taken.
Southall led a similar program for several years in Ohio. “We started in a little hallway in an apartment complex … but it got so big we took it to the church,” she said.
She said they have a goal of 100 to 125 children for 2017, the turnout for the Angel Share program she led in Ohio.
Half of the proceeds will go toward funding the program, replenishing supplies and other community needs, Southall said. Warsaw Church of God will get 25 percent, and the remaining 25 percent will go to a community project. This year’s project is helping commuter students at Grace College with gas, food and other expenses.
Angel Share is accepting donations of gifts, gift cards and money for the 2017 program.
In addition, volunteers are needed to help on Dec. 2. Duties would include wrapping gifts and taking children to the various areas set up for gift wrapping, making their card, photographs, etc.
To register a child for Angel Share, call Southall at 419-905-2847 or email [email protected].
Anyone interested in volunteering or needing more information on the program should also contact Southall.
