Triton learned that lesson the hard way at the Trojan Trench, dropping a 52-41 decision to South Central in a non-conference girls basketball game Friday night.
The Lady Trojans could not have planned a worse start to the game, turning the ball over on each of its first five possessions and falling behind 8-0 less than 2-1/2 minutes in. The home team regrouped enough to tie the game at 14 by the end of the first quarter, and even held a four-point lead in the second period.
But four more turnovers on consecutive possessions, and three more empty trips down the floor, allowed the Lady Satellites to take a 21-17 lead at halftime.
Still, with 16 turnovers in the first half alone, Triton head coach Adam Heckaman was a little surprised his squad still had a shot at victory.
“We talked at halftime that somehow we were still in the game. I’m not exactly sure how, after the first half, we were still in the game,” Heckaman said. “We came out in the third and played very well. We caused some turnovers, we were the aggressors and we got in to the bonus pretty quick.
“But then the wheels fell off. We started making poor decisions again, and once we lost the lead, they’re a good free throw shooting team and they knocked down all the free throws they needed to.”
In the third quarter Triton got seven points from Hannah Wanemacher and four from Whytnie Miller, and forced six South Central turnovers to forge a two-point lead heading into the final stanza.
South Central got a pair of three-point plays and a three-point basket from Faith Biggs to key a 13-0 run and take a 10-point lead. Triton never seriously threatened the rest of the night.
Heckaman said while the South Central defensive pressure played a role in his team’s 28 turnovers, his team had some self-inflicted damage as well.
“The big part of that is we’re not making good decisions,” he said. “We’ve got to get better at seeing defenders; we probably threw at least five passes to them for layups. And that’s just something we’re going to have to work on.
“We need to get in and see it on film a little bit, try to learn from it, and try to amp up the pressure in practice so they feel it a little bit more so we get accustomed to it.”
Wanemacher finished with a game-high 15 points. Nichole Sechrist added nine and Miller finished with five points for Triton. Junior Chelsea Johnson, filling in for the injured Charlotte Morris, gathered eight rebounds.
In the junior varsity game, Lexia Hostrawser scored 10 points and Jaela Faulkner added eight for Triton in its 35-27 win over South Central.
Triton (1-2) hosts Marshall County rival Bremen at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in a varsity-only matchup. The Lady Lions don’t have a JV squad.
