Workout Anytime Helps Fight Veteran Suicide

Veterans accounted for 18 percent of suicides in the United States in 2014, even though they were only 8.5 percent of the population, according to a July 2016 Veterans Administration report.

Though that’s down from 22 percent of all deaths from suicide in 2010 (and veterans constituted 9.7 percent of the population), Workout Anytime is partnering with Lift For The 22 for a second year because even one is one too many.

Jason Spindler, Workout Anytime Warsaw manager and personal trainer, explained that Lift For The 22 is an organization that provides gym memberships for veterans to help fight the suicide epidemic.

“Basically, most of them are suffering from PTSD or something like that. (Lift For The 22) does it because they found that the gym is a good support system, especially when you get other veterans in there as well,” he said.

“It’s huge for them because they can work out with someone they can relate with. Someone who is going through the same scenario that they are. It helps them transition into the everyday life outside of the gym as well. That’s kind of where it helps fight the suicide epidemic.”

Spindler said Lift For The 22 provides veterans with one-year premium gym memberships.

“So they get the tanning, the hydro-massage, a guest pass even,” he said.

For every new membership at Workout Anytime through Saturday, the gym is donating $1 to Lift For The 22. The organization also has a website at liftforthe22.org where people can donate.

“You can donate $1 or you can donate $100, it doesn’t really matter. That’s their main way of funding these memberships, by fundraising. But we do various fundraisers throughout the year with them that way they can keep providing (veterans) with gym memberships,” Spindler said.

Through the partnership between Workout Anytime and Lift For The 22, he said they’ve been able to provide “quite a few” gym memberships to veterans.

A veteran can acquire a free gym membership through the program by applying online at its website anytime of the year.

“If they get accepted through Lift For The 22 – it takes about three to four weeks for them to go through the applications and everything like that for them to get their membership – so what we do is we give them the first month free as they’re going through the application process. Generally, they’ll have the free membership by the time that runs out,” Spindler said. “If they don’t qualify for it for whatever reason, we also do 50 percent off on enrollments for veterans if they’re doing the regular month-to-month memberships as well. And we do that year-round.”

He said with it being Veterans Day Saturday, November is the big push for fundraising for Lift For The 22.

Every Workout Anytime across the country is partnering with Lift For The 22.

“It’s a pretty big partnership, a widespread partnership,” Spindler said.
