Lady Vikings Cruise To Win Over CGA

AKRON – In a postgame interview Tuesday night, answering questions about his team’s 81-26 win over the Culver Girls Academy Eagles, Tippecanoe Valley coach Chris Kindig made the statement “I think the girls were ready to play tonight.”

They certainly were.

The Lady Vikings dominated CGA from the opening tip to the final whistle, as they cruised to the 55-point win and improved to 2-0.

CGA fell to 2-1.

“I thought, defensively, we really showed some improvement from our game last week in a lot of different areas,” said Kindig. “(Offensively) we only had 13 turnovers, but we want to get that below 10 if we can.

“Defensively, we played quite a bit of man. We came out and pressed, and I really felt like that got our energy level going in that first quarter. It really got us off to a good start.

“I think the girls were ready to play tonight. I saw a lot of improvement from Game 1 to Game 2, and that’s what you’re looking for. Hopefully we can keep making those strides, so by the end of the year we’re where we need to be.”

The Lady Vikings, who made 18 steals and benefited from 28 CGA turnovers, raced out to a 15-2 lead and led 28-6 after one quarter of play.

Valley’s advantage ballooned to 43-18 at halftime and 65-24 by the end of the third quarter.

Junior Sophie Bussard scored a game-high 26 points in the win, while senior Addy Miller added 18.

Senior Olivia Trippiedi and sophomore Makenzie Woodcox scored eight points each, while junior Emily Peterson chipped in with seven.

Bussard filled out her stat line with six rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists. Miller finished with four rebounds, four steals and an assist.

“Tonight we had nine people in the scorebook,” said Kindig, noting the 81 points was a product of contributions from a number of girls.

“Addy had 18, Sophie had 26. Sophie had 18 at halftime, so she really didn’t have to do a whole lot in the second half.”

CGA scored 12 points in the second quarter, nearly half of its final tally.

Sophomores Mary Cate Wright and Evelyn Frutkin led CGA with six points each, while classmate Dana Rodgers chipped in with four points.

The Lady Vikings, who have won 13 of their last 15 regular season games dating back to last season, are in action again Tuesday when they host Logansport.

“I expect them to be a lot better than they were last year,” said Kindig, whose team made 13 three-pointers in a 94-29 win at Logansport last year.

“We get them at home. We have a little film on them. Obviously it’s early in the season, but that’s the next game so that’s what we’re gonna tackle next.

“Again, with this team, as long as we can do one game at time I think we’re OK. As long as we don’t look ahead two or three games, and we take what’s in front of us, we’ll be OK. I expect Logansport to be much-improved.”
