CARMEL – Grace’s cross country team enjoyed the pinnacle of its season with the 2017 Crossroads League Championships on Saturday.

The men’s team placed sixth out of 10 teams, and the women were ninth.

Sam Hall led Grace’s team. He finished in 21st place in a time of 27:24. Elijah Brooks had a personal-best time of 27:37, and Ben Rankin was 15 seconds behind him.

Drew Jones’s 28:12 was fourth for Grace, Brendan Hamilton finished in 28:34, and John Marhefka (29:01) and Matt Halbakken (29:03) were in a tight pack. Tim Drew was the final runner for Grace.

“I’m very pleased with the way the guys ran today. Sam Hall ended up in the top-25, and Elijah Brooks ran his best race of the season. Drew Jones ran well, and John Marhefka finished strong to hold off a Huntington runner. Marhefka’s one place broke the tie with Huntington to help us finish sixth,” said Grace head coach Jeff Raymond. “Unfortunately two runners were not able to finish because of injuries (Carter Meyer and Jon Balda). They worked hard at cross training to try to prepare for this race but were not able to finish. They both are freshmen and have many good performances ahead of them.”

On the women’s side, Liz Fox wrapped up her strong junior season with a 31st place finish of 20:22 to lead the squad.

Aubrey Breininger (20:51) and McCalah Mast (20:59) finished in the top-50. Suzanne Sickafoose was fourth for Grace in 21:12, and Karla Singer was eight seconds back. Emma Mitchell and Jesse Zvers rounded out the team’s lineup.

“Liz has come a long way in the last year and, along with Aubrey, have probably been our most consistent runners,” Raymond continued. “The ladies have battled a lot of things this year, including some nagging injuries and ailments. I appreciate their toughness and willingness to keep working.”

The Lancers will compete next week at the NCCAA National Championship in Mississippi.
