Roger was born Aug. 27, 1921, to Raymond Earl and Goldie Carney Hoover Sawyer, who are deceased. On June 1, 1947, he married Hulda Bidlack, who died Feb. 17, 1992. He married Dorothy Roush in February 1993; she preceded him in death Oct. 31, 2009.
He is survived by his son, Dr. Douglas (Peggy) Sawyer, Warsaw; his grandchildren, Amanda (Dave) Bailey, Warsaw; Aaron (Marcia) Sawyer, Austin, Texas; and Andrew (Rachel) Sawyer, San Francisco, Calif.; his beloved great-grandsons, Keller and Finley Bailey, Warsaw; and stepdaughters Cindy Swain, Carmel; Nancy (Dale) Geiselman, Zionsville; and Ellen (Troy) Rector, Carmel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert; and his sister, Marjorie Chalfant.
Roger graduated from Bluffton High School in 1939. He attended International Business College after serving in World War II in the Army in Burma from 1942-1945. He then went on to attend the Northern Illinois College of Optometry and graduated in 1949. He opened his optometry practice in 1949 in North Manchester, where he practiced for 37 years.
He was a member of Kiwanis Club, past member of Tippy Golf Club, Stonehenge Golf Club and a charter member of Sycamore Golf Course. He was a Shriner and also a member of North Manchester United Methodist Church.
His passion was golf, and he scored four holes-in-one in his lifetime – the last coming at age 87. He wintered in the Naples, Fla., area for 35 years. He was a member of Quail Run Golf Course there. He loved bird watching, and he loved to whistle, sing and dance.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date.
