She was born Oct. 31, 1921, in Water Valley, Miss., the daughter of John and Ada Bross Goodwin. On Oct. 8, 1938, she married Woodrow Free; he preceded her in death Sept. 17, 1988.
Elsie moved to Milford in 1951 and retired from Chore-Time in 1983 after 27 years of faithful service.
She was a devout member of Milford Christian Church for over 60 years. Elsie taught Sunday School for over five decades, 16 years of which were spent teaching Sunday School at Lakeland Rehabilitation Center.
On April 26, 1986, Milford’s centennial year, she was chosen as Milford’s mayor, which was only honorary, but an honor she enjoyed very much. On Mother’s Day in 1992, Elsie was crowned Senior Queen of Milford Nutrition Site. In July 2000, she was chosen “Our Lady of Kosciusko County.” Elsie was a 60-year member of the Kosciusko Chapter of the Eastern Star and served two terms as Worthy Matron. She was a member of the Goshen Eastern Star at the time of her passing.
Survivors include a daughter, Sue (Bud) Campbell, Milford; a son, Willard R. Free, Fort Meyers, Fla.; five grandchildren: Jeff Campbell and Lisa (Dan) Cochran, both of Milford; Sue Ellen Kipp, Fort Meyers, Fla.; John E. Free, Price, Utah; and Doug Free, Las Vegas, Nev.; along with three great-grandchildren: Hannah, Abraham and Madelyn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and three sisters.
A funeral service will be held in Elsie’s honor at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Mishler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Milford. Pastor Rick Brouillette will officiate. Burial will follow at Milford Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service Wednesday.
