David Robertson, chief academic officer, said Harrison has one of the highest amount of students. The new constructed Lincoln building made it possible to a make the small adjustment, he said.
The affected families have already been notified and toured Lincoln.
The area south of U.S. 30, known as the Springhill and Shamrock neighborhoods, will now move into Lincoln Elementary district.
Roberston said redistricting is never ideal, but it was necessary and this was only a small adjustment. Fifth-grade students moving into the sixth grade will be able to stay at Harrison if they want.
In other business, the board unanimously approved the price schedule for textbook rental prices for the 2017-18 school year. Many classes at the middle school and high school level will see a reduction in prices from last year.
Robertson said elementary classes will see an increase for the most part. The increase is due the expansion of the district 1:1 tablet program for kindergarten through fourth grade. The increases are as follows: kindergarten, $6; first grade, $54; second grade, $47; third grade, $55; fourth grade, $68; fifth grade, $25; and sixth grade, $36.
Representatives from the Indiana Teachers Of English To Speakers Of Other Languages announced the inaugural Wendy Wildman-Long Scholarship winner.
Kinary Guadalupe Cruz Bautista, Warsaw, is the winner of the first scholarship. The scholarship is named after Wildman-Long, the former director of the languages at WCS. Wildman-Long died earlier this year after an illness.
Dr. Trish Morita-Mullaney, INTESOL, made the announcement at Monday’s meeting.
Bautista explained everything Wildman-Long stood for. Bautista started out in EL and is now dedicated to helping others learn English. Morita-Mullaney handed Bautista the award at the meeting. Family members of Wildman-Long were on hand for the presentation of the scholarship. Morita-Mullaney also presented the family with a plaque honoring the creation of the scholarship.
Morita-Mullaney said the organization started the scholarship after talking to Wildman-Long when she first became sick..
“I don’t know if you understand you had a rockstar here,” Morita-Mullaney said of Wildman-Long.
